An overnight shooting in Minneapolis has killed at least one man and injured 11 others

• A witness at the scene told CNN: "We started hearing whizzing by our ears, and it was the bullets coming towards us."

An overnight shooting in Minneapolis has left at least one man dead and 11 others injured, according to police.

The victims are being treated at local hospitals with "various severity levels of injuries", Minneapolis police tweeted in the early hours of Sunday. Their injuries are non-life-threatening.

The incident happened in a commercial district near Landmark's Uptown Theatre, which is lined with several bars and restaurants. It is about 3 miles away from the area which saw riots on the first weekend following George Floyd's death on May 25.

"Preliminary investigation reveals that individuals on foot started shooting in the mid-2900 block of Hennepin Avenue South and proceeded north. People scattered and suspects fled," police said in a news release.

Photos posted on Twitter by a Minneapolis Star-Tribune reporter showed windows at the theater and another storefront shot out.

A Facebook live video of the aftermath of the scene showed people crouched over attending to victims and blood splattered on the pavement, according to MPR News.

Minneapolis police spokesperson, John Elder, told the local radio station: "We are in the infancy of this investigation, so at this point, we don't know what truly led up to this shooting."

Erik Thompson, who witnessed the shooting, said the gunshots first sounded like "fireworks."

"We started hearing whizzing by our ears, and it was the bullets coming towards us," Thompson said, according to CNN.

"The hardest part was just ... not knowing what to do, so we kind of hit the deck. The two cops who were there on our side of the street had the protection of their cop car, and they (drew) their weapons. It was pretty surreal."

Fred Hwang, who manages a restaurant nearby, told CNN that he saw at least two groups of people firing weapons at each other.

Police have made no arrests so far, and the motive remains unclear.
