The World Health Organization reported more than 136,000 new coronavirus cases over the past 24 hours on Monday, the highest number of daily cases since the pandemic began.

The organization has warned that the pandemic is worsening, and advises countries that are seeing improvements to "remain vigilant," The New York Times reported.

"More than 100,000 cases have been reported on nine of the past 10 days," Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO's director-general, said at a briefing on Monday, according to the Times.

According to the report, more than 79,500 of the new cases were recorded in the Americas. The Times reported that the bulk of the new cases came from 10 countries.

Cases have been climbing for a few weeks. On May 21, the WHO also reported a then-record of 106,000 new daily cases.

As of Monday, over 7 million coronavirus infections were recorded worldwide, with more than 405,000 deaths. Over 110,000 — or more than a quarter of those deaths — were in the US.

According to The Times, the director-general has advised protesters in the US, who are demonstrating for racial justice to "practice social distancing, wear masks, wash their hands, cover their coughs and stay home if they were sick."

"We continue to urge active surveillance to ensure the virus does not rebound, especially as mass gatherings of all kinds are starting to resume in some countries," Tedros said, according to the Times. "WHO fully supports equality and the global movement against racism. We reject discrimination of all kinds. We encourage all those protesting around the world to do so safely."

New cases have emerged in the US after people gathered in close spaces without following social distancing guidelines. Insider previously reported that at least 12 new COVID-19 cases in Pennsylvania could be traced back to gatherings at beach houses on New Jersey's Jersey Shore.
