Kellyanne Conway, a top counselor to the president, insisted on Wednesday night that "nobody" in the White House talks about - or cares about - Hillary Clinton, just hours after President Donald Trump tweeted about Clinton, suggesting that her campaign colluded with the Russians during the 2016 elections.
"Did Dems or Clinton also pay Russians? Where are hidden and smashed DNC servers? Where are Crooked Hillary Emails? What a mess!" Trump tweeted.
During his interview with Conway, CNN host Chris Cuomo questioned whether the president can be trusted when he denies any collusion between his campaign and the Russians, given that he and others on his campaign also insisted there was no contact between members of the campaign and Russians - an assertion that was later proven false.
Conway did not directly deny that the Trump campaign and the Russians worked together to influence the 2016 election - an issue under investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller - instead responding that it is a "fantasy" to believed that the campaign needed to collude with Moscow in order to win the election.
"The idea that we would have to look any further than Hillary Clinton to beat Hillary Clinton itself is a fantasy," Conway said. "I didn't need to talk to anyone in Moscow ... There's no reason to have gone anywhere outside of Hillary Clinton and how unattractive her policies were, how lacking in vision and connective tissue with the forgotten man and forgotten woman she was."
She went on, "We beat her fairly and squarely in this country through this democratic elected process, but so many people still can't get over the election results -"
"Says my friend who can't keep Hillary Clinton's name out of her mouth," Cuomo interjected, laughing. "You guys are frozen in that moment, that's why you bring up Hillary Clinton, that's why you're having her investigated, it's as obvious as it is counterproductive."
Conway then countered that CNN is preoccupied by the 2016 election, and that "nobody" in the White House thinks much about Clinton.
"We don't care about her, nobody here talks about her," Conway said. "Hey, Chris, nobody here talks about Hillary Clinton, I promise you."
"You just brought her up," Cuomo said.
"You're talking about the 2016 election, don't tell us that we're talking about it," Conway said. "We won the election, we're gonna win the next one."
Trump also railed against Clinton during a Wednesday press conference with the Norwegian prime minister.
