Lok Sabha Elections 2019: Updated poll schedule, counting/results to be delayed by 5 days

The elections commission on Friday submitted a 50-page affidavit in the Supreme Court stating that counting VVPATs of 50% EVMs, as demanded by 21 opposition parties can potentially delay the result by around 5 days.


The elections commission also said that some constituencies have as many as 400 polling stations and counting 50% VVPATs can take up to 8-9 days. There are 10.35 lakh polling stations all over the country with an average of 250 per constituency. It takes around 1 hour to count slips for one polling station so 50% of total slips would take an average of 5.2 days, said EC in its statement.

The elections commission also said that the revised counting structure will lead to negligible gains in the voter confidence on EVM machines which currently stands at 99.99%.
