Magnitude 7.4 earthquake hits southern Japan

A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck near Kumamoto in southern Japan on Friday at a depth of 40 km (25 miles), the U.S. Geological Survey said.

It earlier reported a 7.1 quake with a depth of 7 km close to the same location.

The new quake came one day after another tremor near the same location that registered at 6.2 killed at least 9 people, BBC reported. A tsunami warning has reportedly been issued for the area.
