Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai has been conferred with another award, the Liberty Medal. Malala, who is the youngest recipient of the award, said, "I'm honoured to receive this medal. It encourages me to continue my campaign for education and to fight for the rights of every child."
The-17-year-old will donate the award money ($100,000) to promote education in Pakistan.
"I speak for those without a voice; I speak for girls who have been persecuted. Why should I not speak? It is our duty to our country. I needed to speak for our right to go to school," she said in her speech.
The award is given to honour “men and women of courage and conviction who strive to secure the blessings of liberty to people around the globe.” The previous recipients of this award include Hillary Clinton, Tony Blair, George HW Bush, Bill Clinton, Kofi Annan and Hamid Karzai.
"Malala's courageous fight for equality and liberty from tyranny is evidence that a passionate, committed leader, regardless of age, has the power to ignite a movement for reform," said Jeb Bush, chairman of the National Constitution Center, which sponsors the medal.
"We cannot become a generation lost. I ask all countries all around the world: Let us say no to wars. Let us say no to conflicts. Together we are stronger than fear, oppression, and terrorism," added Malala.
Malala was the target of an assassination attempt by the Taliban in 2012.
