Employees at the wine farm helped Punke-Dresen and nearly 100 other guests book travel home before the lockdown went into effect at midnight on March 26. Punke-Dresen's family booked a return flight, and could finally breathe easily knowing they'd get out just in time. But then, their flight was abruptly canceled.
A recent study published in the journal The Lancet found that the novel coronavirus only lives for three hours on printing paper and tissue paper. According to Camins, lab studies may not reflect real-world conditions, so it's possible that the virus' lifespan would be even shorter in practical situations, where conditions are not monitored or controlled.
By comparison, the same study found that the novel coronavirus could survive for up to a week on plastic or stainless steel. That means that even if a piece of mail was to become contaminated with the COVID-19-causing virus, the virus would likely die before it reached your mailbox.

For the past seven decades, four generations of Catherine Escalera's family have, at one point or another, lived in her Long Island home. As the current owner, the 49-year-old former nail technician is responsible for the $3,200 a month mortgage that remains.
Until last month, Escalera would spend nearly her entire retirement check on the mortgage, and her three adult children who still live at home would chip in for other living expenses. Now that two of her contributing sons are out of work, Escalera fears she will lose the house.
"People have normal problems and you pile this on top, its a recipe for disaster," Escalera said. "Financially, people who are already teetering on the edge, you're pushing them right over."
Escalera's three eldest sons pay all of the bills outside of her mortgage. Two of them, including a barber who contributes the most, haven't gotten a paycheck in three weeks, she said.
"We're all in this together. We're a close family. You know if we need bread, someone gets the bread. We live paycheck to paycheck," she told Business Insider. "I can barely pay the mortgage as it is."
In addition to missing an electricity payment this month, and fearing for what's going to happen when the next round of bills hit early next month, Escalera has resorted to feeding her family mostly cheap bulk meals of pasta and rice.
Her family rarely eats out, so that's something that hasn't changed. Now, though, meat is missing from some their meals.
"My kids eat almost all their meals at home, but they'd like to order little things at night, maybe a pizza. But now there is none of that," she said. "Not that we could go out and eat steak every night anyway, we eat chop meat every night, but now you can't even do that. You gotta stretch everything."
Escalera said her family can't afford to wait for the stimulus checks. Her mortgage payment is coming up fast and now that she can't put her whole retirement check toward that, the family is in trouble.
She was already a bit behind on her mortgage as is, so she thinks it's unlikely that her creditor would be willing to negotiate again.
Even when the $1,200 does come, it will barely pay a month's taxes on her house, she said.
The financial hardship she's facing has made Escalera frustrated with the government's slow response.
In order to stay afloat, Escalera believes that people living in expensive cities, like New York, would need relief of several thousands of dollars a month.
"I really believe in this country. We're Italian-Americans. We're so patriotic in this family," Escalera said. "It was everything: you worked for unions, you take care of your family, you buy a house, you pay your bills on time. But you're killing us. You're killing the middle class."
"I just see people with tears in their eyes in the grocery store," she added. "There's sadness everywhere, and I'm just very sad for us now."
Still, at the end of the day Escalera said she tries to stay positive for her children, especially her daughter, who is 14.
"I have a TV from Rent-a-Center. If that has to go, so be it. That's not a big deal," she said. "Cellphones have to be paid because that's the only line of communication. If we have to sell this house, we have to sell the house. I'm not going to kill myself over it."

While every company operates differently, usually an HR professional is the best resource for an unemployed worker, said Kristin Andreski, senior vice president and general manager of ADP retirement services.

Yes, there are school feeding programs and food banks, but many people in urban areas like Atlanta, where Goodr is headquartered, don't have cars. And now that most parents are home with their kids, they can't afford the round-trip bus fare. Seniors are told to stay inside, but they need food, and have no way to get it without putting themselves at risk.
Austria has a 250-mile border with Italy, which had Europe's first large-scale coronavirus outbreak and, at one point, had the highest death toll of any nation.
Due to their proximity (it only takes about four-and-a-half hours to drive from Milan to Innsbruck, Austria), it is not unusual for Austrians to travel to Italy for a holiday or vice versa.
The infected couple were treated at a hospital in Innsbruck, according to the Guardian.
Testing in much of the US and the UK still lags behind other nations, with most coronavirus tests going to people who can afford high prices or those already in critical condition.
Sham Kakade, a computer scientist at the University of Washington and a coauthor of PACT contact tracing protocols, told WIRED that contact tracing only works "if you test far more cases than come up positive."
Rather than focusing on a contact tracing app, Anderson recommends pouring resources into hiring human workers to serve as paid contact tracers who monitor the spread of the virus — a measure that's showing early signs of success in Taiwan and Germany.
"Insofar as governments think that by getting some fancy piece of technology, they can solve the problem and make me the bad thing go away — they're just fooling themselves," he said.
In late March, before the US had experienced the height of its outbreak and many Americans were unsure of what to make of the pandemic, Alexander asked the president to address Americans who might be afraid.
"What do you say to Americans who are watching you right now who are scared?" Alexander asked.
Trump immediately fired back with, "I say that you're a terrible reporter; that's what I say," and told Alexander that his question was "very nasty" and put out a bad signal to Americans.

Perhaps the most popular and easiest go-to answer for this bunch is the Mazda Miata, or MX-5. Now in its fourth generation, the Miata has always committed to being a lightweight, two-door, rear-wheel drive roadster. It's basically the gold standard of cheap automotive fun.
The Miata comes with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission and a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine. It's great if you want to take a passenger out for a weekend of spirited driving. The Miata's relatively low power output — 181 horsepower — also means that you won't suddenly find yourself at law-breaking speeds.
Prices start at $26,580.
When Harris was still in the 2020 primary race, she was one of Biden's toughest rivals, consistently sparring with him during televised debates.
But after Harris ended her campaign in December 2019, she has emerged as one of the most frequently mentioned running mates for Biden.
At a relatively young 55 years of age, she would help balance a ticket with a septuagenarian at the top. Her resume includes a stint as California's attorney general, and she has served over three years in the U.S. Senate.
Nominating Harris would also diversify the presidential ticket, which many Democrats would like to see given that the 2020 race began as the most diverse field in history only to narrow to a white man.
The Blackwings will be Cadillac's "ultra-performance" and "track-capable" models — and, incredibly, offered with manual transmissions, per the official press release. That's a big deal for the enthusiast community, especially since rival cars such as the BMW M5 and Mercedes-AMG E63 do not offer manuals. (There are rumors the upcoming 2021 BMW M3 will come with a manual, but the car hasn't officially debuted yet.)
A story published by Car and Driver on Tuesday claims Cadillac is putting an updated version of the outgoing CTS-V's 6.2-liter, supercharged V8 into the CT5-V Blackwing. A story published on January 22 made similar claims. That supercharged V8, when it was in the CTS-V, made an earth-shattering 650 horsepower.

Sony's two game giveaway is approximately three weeks long, starting on April 15 at 8 pm PT and going through to May 5, 2020 at 8 pm PT. If you live anywhere in the world and have a PlayStation 4, you get two free games.
In the vast majority of places, you get "Journey" and "Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection." If you're in Germany or China, the latter game is swapped for "Knack 2." Sorry everyone in Germany and China!
You don't have to be a PlayStation Plus subscriber to get the games — you just need a PlayStation 4 with an internet connection.
It somewhat pains me to say that the best unlimited plan you can get right now is also the most expensive, but it shouldn't come as much of a surprise. Still, when you take a step back, the competition's best unlimited plans aren't that much cheaper.
The key things that put Verizon in the top spot is its superior coverage and the generous 75GB of unrestricted data before speeds can be reduced. The 30GB of mobile hotspot data is generous, too, and perks like free Apple Music can be tempting.
Here's what you get with Verizon's Get More Unlimited plan:
Terrorism, the spread of nuclear weapons, and state-sponsored cyberattacks were each viewed by approximately three-quarters of Americans as a major threat, while around 60% said the same about climate change. But nearly eight out of ten said infectious diseases posed a major threat, reflecting how the coronavirus has deeply impacted people's lives.
Newsom did not identify a timeline for introducing changes to the order, but he said there would need to be a decline in hospitalizations and ICU numbers before any firm indication could be given on when they would occur.
There are currently 24,379 confirmed cases of the virus in California, with 725 reported deaths.
Newsom said Tuesday that the total number of ICU beds declined by 0.1% Monday. And according to tracking data compiled by the University of Minnesota, there are at least 3,000 current hospitalizations in California.
California, and specifically the San Francisco Bay Area, has been thrust into the national spotlight and lauded for the early actions it took in an attempt to keep the outbreak at bay in the state. But California also has a backlog of test results — the state had 15,000 pending tests as of April 6, according to The Mercury News.
And there's still work to be done in tracing points of contact among residents. Doing so would help contain the reach of the virus and stop it from spreading to more people.
"We can't get ahead of ourselves," Newsom said.
Dozens of tornados and severe weather tore through the southeast over the weekend, killing at least 30 people and leaving a heap of destruction in its wake.
The storms began ravaging through the region on Sunday and lasted through Monday, with Mississippi hit hardest. Destruction from the heart of the storm could be felt across parts of Kentucky, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Arkansas.
At least 11 people were killed in Mississippi, while nine were killed in South Carolina, and eight in Georgia.
The event marks one of the most severe natural disasters since the coronavirus pandemic took hold across the world; and providing relief for victims has been tricky, as states grapple with the prospect of breaking social distancing guidelines to provide aid.
With hurricane season on the horizon, experts fear that severe weather could become more frequent — leaving some parts of the country even more vulnerable during the pandemic.
Apple CEO Tim Cook announced last week that the iPhone maker would begin designing face shields for medical workers in the US treating COVID-19.
Cook said that Apple has already delivered a batch of the face shields to Kaiser Permanente hospital facilities, which are located in California's Santa Clara Valley. While distribution has been limited to the US so far, Apple hopes to expand to countries beyond the US.
According to Cook, Apple is planning to ship one million face shields by the end of this week, and one million per week after that.
Apple has since added a support page to its website that provides more information about the protective equipment, like how to clean and adjust the face shields.
Apple is also donating 20 million face masks to help combat the spread of the virus.
The ski town of Telluride, Colorado, is known for the privacy and discreet scene it offers America's wealthy.
In late March, United Biomedical Inc. began rolling out its company's newly developed COVID-19 antibody tests for free to the small ski community of Telluride, Colorado, and the surrounding San Miguel County area, reported Christie Aschwanden for Kaiser Health News.
"This was a gift and an opportunity," San Miguel County spokesperson Susan Lilly told Aschwanden.
About 6,000 of 8,000 San Miguel residents opted to get tested, but as of April 6, only 1,631 tests were processed. According to Aschwanden, testing was "delayed indefinitely." The delay is due to the majority of United Biomedical Inc's operations and staff being located in New York, which is suffering greatly from the pandemic, according to a press release.
The company plans to resume processing the remaining tests from the first round of testing, the release stated.
Biden supports continuing strict social distancing measures for the time being to keep the rate of infections down. He also said the nation's coronavirus testing capabilities must be ramped up.
"There needs to be widespread, easily available and prompt testing — and a contact tracing strategy that protects privacy," Biden said in a New York Times op-ed.
Contract-tracing refers to a method public health experts use to curb the spread of a disease, according to The Verge. It involves finding a sick person and determining who they recently interacted with.
Biden also said public health officials should be empowered to conduct "effective disease surveillance."
Depending on how much technology is incorporated into contact tracing, the practice could raise a slew of civil liberties issues.
The former vice president said that life won't be returning to normal anytime soon.
"Things will not go back to 'normal' right away," Biden wrote. "As public health experts have said, we should expect activity to return gradually, with sites like offices and stores reopening before arenas and theaters."
Other possible scenarios Biden laid out included spacing out workers in offices and factories, and reordering layouts in restaurants to keep diners farther apart.
Only a vaccine, Biden said, would "extinguish" the threat of the coronavirus.

The CDC just extended its no-sail order for cruise ships, as this form of travel is seen as one of the most risky during a pandemic.
Experts have explained that large passenger ships can quickly become a breeding ground for illnesses like the coronavirus. Since hundreds of passengers are within close quarters of each other for extended periods of time, diseases can spread much more quickly on a cruise ship than other modes of transportation.
"What puts people more at risk while traveling is that they come in contact with lots of other people, and also there's prolonged exposure to other people and shared surfaces in a confined space," Dr. Stephen Luby, a professor of medicine specializing in infectious diseases at Stanford University, told Business Insider.
In a media release, CDC Director Robert Redfield said, "We are working with the cruise line industry to address the health and safety of crew at sea as well as communities surrounding US cruise ship points of entry.
"The measures we are taking today to stop the spread of COVID-19 are necessary to protect Americans, and we will continue to provide critical public health guidance to the industry to limit the impacts of COVID-19 on its workforce throughout the remainder of this pandemic."

Walmart currently has three coronavirus test sites open.
The company plans to have more than 20 coronavirus testing sites operating in at least 10 states by the end of April, the company told Business Insider on Monday.
"We currently have three sites open, and we have plans to expand testing to multiple sites next week with the goal of having more than 20 sites in more than 10 states by the end of the month," a Walmart spokesperson said. "We have been learning a lot from our initial sites so that we can get the model right and are working hard to help expand testing in areas of need as quickly as possible."
The spokesperson added: "We remain committed to supporting government efforts to expand COVID-19 drive-thru testing during this critical time, and we are working closely with Quest Diagnostics, HHS, and several states to open sites in areas of need."
The sites are staffed by the US Department of Health and Human Services, as well as Walmart pharmacists who volunteered to support the locations.
"Firms will need to communicate a clear plan for reopening their businesses," Kostin wrote Monday. "Importantly, unless they plan to re-hire furloughed and laid off employees by the time the extended unemployment benefits terminate this summer, more policy support will likely be needed to avert further damage to US consumers."
He continued: "Investors will be able to glean lessons about the impact of the shutdown and the path toward normalization by comparing the pace of earnings growth in different end markets and in different months."
"For example, for operations in Europe and the US, contrasting the pace of growth in January and February with March would help clarify the business impact of shutdowns and what to expect for earnings in the remainder of 2020."
Kostin also said investors should watch for how industries more insulated from the virus, such as software and services, technology, and semiconductors, fare amid the crisis.
The first will require that those who want to opt into the program download an app distributed by a public health authority. Apple and Google are making their application programming interfaces, or tools that enable apps to use certain aspects of an operating system, available for public health authorities in May.
The second phase will involve Apple and Google building the ability to participate in the program directly into their respective smartphone operating systems, eliminating the need to download an app. This stage is expected to arrive in the coming months.

Sometimes, introverts retreat without explaining their need for solitude. Confused by their sudden departure from the living room, well-meaning extrovert partners often follow to try and understand "what's wrong."
This is why it's so important to talk about your needs. Your partner won't understand your frustration unless you explain why you're struggling.

Delta has canceled more than 80% of its April schedule, and expects cancellations to continue past May.
With passengers unable — or unwilling — to fly right now and for the foreseeable future, the airline is making a few changes to support its frequent flyers, and to offer flexibility for those with trips planned this summer and fall who may now be having second thoughts.
Travel credits extended for up to two years, and fees are waived for cancellations and changesBecause there's still uncertainty surrounding when travel can resume, Delta said it would extend the validity of travel credits, such as the vouchers customers receive if they choose to cancel a flight (although if the airline cancels the flight, rather than the passenger, the airline has to offer a regular refund).
All eCredits are automatically extended until May 2022 — note that if you have a credit in your Delta account, it may not reflect the new expiration date right away, but the airline says it's working on it.
Tickets purchased between March 1 and May 31, 2020, can be changed without fees for up to a year from the date of purchase.
Additionally, anyone with travel scheduled to depart in April or May can change their dates — or destinations — without a fee, or can cancel their trip to receive an eCredit.
Extending SkyMiles Medallion status through 2021All SkyMiles Medallion members will see their status tier extended for one year, through 2021.
That means that if you hold Platinum Medallion status now, you won't have to worry about requalifying by the end of December 2020 like you normally would.
In addition, all Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs) earned this year will be rolled over into 2021, so they'll count towards your 2022 status. MQMs are miles earned for flights, which are one of the ways to earn status.
Delta Sky Club memberships are extendedFor some Sky Club lounge membership holders who, thanks to the lack of flying and lounge closures, have not been able to use their memberships, Delta is offering an extension.
Sky Club Individual and Executive memberships that are set to expire March 1, 2020, or later, will get an extra six months added.
That means that if you were set to expire on April 1, you'll keep access to Sky Clubs until October.
Some credit card benefits are also extendedSome of Delta's co-branded credit cards, which are issued by American Express, come with a variety of one-time or recurring benefits, such as flight credits, companion certificates, or guest passes. In March, Gen Z received a lot of backlash for ignoring coronavirus warnings and social distancing rules. College kids were crowding beaches everywhere from Florida to Texas to live up their spring break, and spring breakers were also spotted partying on booze cruises in The Bahamas.
Jawontae Rodgers, a 21-year-old who spring breaked in Panama City Beach, told Valerie Crowder of local outlet WFSU he didn't think the virus was a "big deal."
"I'm not saying I can't die from it," he said. "I just don't want to stop living my life because you only have one. YOLO: You only live once."
But this attitude has helped spread the coronavirus. A group of 70 spring breakers chartered a plane from Texas to Cabo in mid-March — 44 of them have tested positive for the coronavirus so far.
Gen Z has also come up with a whole new set of slang to describe the coronavirus pandemic, reported Business Insider's Dominic Madori-Davis, from "Miss Rona" to "boomer remover."

The reality: As of April 13, there are just 8 drive-thru testing facilities across the country. Walmart has opened two testing sites, Walgreens has opened another two, and CVS is operating four sites, NPR found.

The Facebook group is now flooded with posts from both RV and camper owners, and frontline healthcare workers looking for vehicles to temporarily live in so they can isolate themselves from their families.
The Facebook group and page has been growing consistently every day since its conception, Haggard said, although she never expected the Facebook group to surge in popularity like it has.
Now, every time she checks her phone, new requests to join the group pop up.
"It's like nothing I've ever seen," Haggard said.
Dr. Robin Gurwitch, psychologist and professor at Duke University Medical Center advises that once you decide who will temporarily take care of your children, proactively let them know who that person will be. She explains, "It is important for children to know they will always have somebody to take care of them and that their caregiver is doing everything they know how to keep them safe and healthy."
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Gurwitch suggests beginning this conversation with a more basic one for older children. Try asking your elementary-age child what do you know? If you have a teenager or college-age child, you ask them what do your friends know? Remain calm, listen, and check back a day or two later. For preschool-age children, Dr. Gurwitch suggests following their lead. Explaining why they can't go to daycare or see their friends if they bring it up. Use simple phrases like "we are trying to keep everyone healthy."

In an essay she wrote for Business Insider, Bendix said her mild coronavirus symptoms morphed into more serious ones a week into feeling ill.
Bendix said she initially just had body aches, but 24 hours later she also started to have chills.
"It felt as if I had run a marathon, then been hit by a car. I decided to self-isolate inside my apartment," Bendix wrote.
A few days passed, and Bendix said her aches started to dissipate. She assumed she was on the road to recovery. But then the rib-cage pain started.
"There was a pressure, too — as if someone were squeezing my lungs like an accordion. My breathing felt heavy," Bendix wrote.
After a trip to the emergency room, doctors said they were unable to test Bendix, but that her symptoms signaled she had COVID-19.
Back at home, Bendix said she had a week of sleepless nights and days when breathing was difficult. It wasn't until that week was over that she started to feel normal again.
"That was about the same time I developed a sore throat. For roughly 24 hours, I struggled to swallow food or liquid," Bendix wrote. "By day 14 of my symptoms — the day I was supposed to no longer be contagious — the aches returned. I felt as if I was back to square one, but at least I could breathe."
On April 5, the day Bendix published her essay, she said she started to finally feel more like herself but still had lingering symptoms like a sore throat and fatigue.

Police are enforcing the rule, and people can face legal action if they do not have permission.
People are told to have proof of their permission, and their receipts of any purchases, on them in case they are stopped by police.
But this year, as Italians hunkered down in their homes to contain the spread of COVID-19, the streets of the Italian capital were remarkably quiet.
Reports of the novel coronavirus first surfaced in Wuhan, China, in December 2019, but researchers now suspect it was circulating in November.
On December 31, the government released a statement to the World Health Organization saying the diseases was "preventable and controllable."
By late January, Chinese authorities identified the illness to be a new strain of coronavirus and acknowledged that it could spread from human-to-human contact. But the government allowed millions of people to travel before initiating lockdowns.
The mayor of Wuhan said 5 million people left the city before the lockdown began, and The New York Times reported at least 7 million people left in January travel was banned.
As the outbreak worsened, the government was accused of suppressing healthcare workers who warned of the virus's spread, and downplaying reports on the number of reported cases and deaths.
The US Intelligence Committee has reportedly determined that President Xi Jinping and his Communist Party spread misinformation and lied about the severity of the outbreak. As of Friday, China has reported more than 82,000 infections and at least 3,340 deaths, but many believe the real number is far higher.
After reporting little to no new infections over the last couple weeks, China has lifted the lockdown on the city of Wuhan.
When it comes to doing simple woodworking jobs at home, having a circular saw gives you a tremendous amount of versatility. It's more mobile than a table saw, yet it delivers plenty of power.
And while there's nothing wrong with sawing one or two 2x4s by hand, if you have 100 to cut, you'll be at it all day with a hand saw. On the plus side, your arm will look very buff.
Our favorite circular saw is the Makita 5007MGA. It delivers the best mix of precision and power among circular saws. It has an excellent electric brake, which will keep you safe while working, and it delivers 5,800 revolutions per minute for plenty of cutting power.
Other expert reviewers mostly have good things to say about the Makita saw. Pro Tool Reviews and Top Ten Reviews give the Makita 5007MGA the highest marks among circular saws, saying it's light enough to take wherever you need to use it. And it can create deep cuts and beveled angle cuts quickly, allowing you to successfully complete almost any job you need to do.
The Makita saw's cutting quality is impressive, but the saw blade may not run straight if you inadvertently place horizontal pressure on the blade while using it, as the blade has a bit of flexibility.
Pros: Outperforms other circular saws, includes a high quality electric brake to keep you safe while cutting, delivers angle cuts up to 56 degrees, lighter weight than other circular saws
Cons: Too much flexibility in the blade when horizontal pressure is applied
Some of those plans didn't involve housing those on the streets, such as for the city's mega-conference hall, Moscone Center. The purpose of using those facilities was to help space out shelter beds in existing shelters so that the homeless could have more room to social distance from one another.

Prepare for your first in-person date the same way you would for your first video call — and realize that there might be a bit of readjustment.
"Pick a spot that you both will enjoy and, just like your first virtual date, have questions ready," Sullivan said. "Being prepared to meet in person will help the first in-person date be successful."
I use the Dr. Brown's Natural Flow Options+ Glass Bottle for everyday use because it can withstand full sanitizing without breaking down the way that polycarbonate bottles do. One of the great things about Dr. Brown's bottles is that the pieces are all interchangeable. They have both a narrow and a wide neck bottle type, but the tops are the same no matter which size you pick, unlike most other bottles.
Along with being premature, my daughter also suffered from severe colic for the first few months of her life, to the point where her pediatrician wanted to temporarily put her on reflux medication. However, after her medication was taken off the market, this bottle helped reduce her symptoms of colic.
I even removed the colic vent a few times to test if it was actually making a difference — and it sure was. Without the vent, my baby basically gulped air, the milk filled with bubbles, and she spit up and had more discomfort. These bottles with the vent were like magic for her. They significantly reduced the amount she spit up and she was much less fussy after eating.
There were a few times when I didn't make sure the vent was completely flat before I fastened the nipple on the bottle. If you do this, the bottle will leak, so be sure the vent is inserted correctly before you feed your baby.
Dr. Brown's bottles are quite affordable and sturdy. I have not had a single one of these bottles break, wear down, or show any signs of damage through multiple dishwashing cycles and microwave sanitizing.
The bottles also have add-on accessories, like silicone sleeves and handles that make holding the bottles easier for you or your baby. Like the nipples, the accessories are also interchangeable, so it doesn't matter what size you're using. I also really appreciate that the wider-neck glass bottles easily fit in a diaper bag bottle pouch.
Pros: Affordable, glass, versatile, removable vent system, anti-colic, durable, nipples interchangeable, easy to clean, easy to use, 4- and 8-ounce options, fits in standard diaper bag pouches, dishwasher safe
Cons: Vent system can leak if not used correctly, warming time is longer than plastic bottles

We take the gear we have, and we head out each night to become 911. We receive radio calls from the New York Fire Department's (FDNY) central dispatcher. There will be two or three of us in the ambulance. For every patient we see, we will wear gloves, safety glasses, and an N95 face mask. If we go to a cardiac arrest, we wear gowns and a second set of gloves. The cardiac arrests are the hardest calls right now. More than once, we have been present at the moment of capture and yet were unable to save the patient.
In the past, if a patient goes into cardiac arrest and we witness it or are there within three minutes, we can often save them. We use a defibrillator to shock them and restart their hearts. But for COVID-19 patients, this is not happening. We are not getting any of them back — and now the Department of Health doesn't want us to bring dead patients to the hospital, so we are pronouncing them dead in the field and turning the bodies over to the police who have to wait for a coroner.
Other times we get a call for a sick person with a fever and cough. When we go to their apartment, we try to cut down the amount of contact. We take turns being the first one to make patient contact. If we have them, we will use a full-body Tyvek suit. These suits make us look like spacemen, but they give us full protection. This is especially important if we need to transport them to the hospital.
Another significant change in patient care is that we try to convince people to not go to the hospital unless they are critical. If they don't seem to have the virus, going to the hospital puts them at higher risk. Additionally, New York hospitals don't have enough beds, so they end up sending all but the most critical patients home anyway.
Before coronavirus, I always told people to go to the hospital out of an abundance of caution. Now I ask them to stay away.
Ever the pragmatist, I wasn't leaving anything to chance. Over long conversations, my husband and I hashed out how we'd make seven months abroad work logistically. I tracked and forecasted our expenses, checked and double-checked online calculators. I mapped out where we'd go, narrowing the scope from "the world" down to the six European countries we could reasonably visit. My Google Doc itinerary stretched nine pages. It was beautiful.
But there were sacrifices, too. I gave notice at a job I'd loved for the past six years and put our beautiful house, which we put so much work into, up for sale. Selling everything — my piano, our perfectly good printer, the banana tree I got as a wedding gift — was hard, but there was something freeing about it, too. It felt like the prologue to an adventure.
When we got an offer on our house in November 2019, it was the day after the first case of COVID-19 in China. But I didn't know that at the time. We accepted the offer, sold our house in December, and stayed in an Airbnb during January for the time leading up to our trip.
Of all the sites that feature independent makers and sellers, Etsy is probably the most well-known. There are countless stores on Etsy selling colorful cloth masks in adult and child sizes. There's endless variety, so you'll be spoiled for choice.
You can also get a sense of what each mask is like by reading through customer reviews. More popular masks, however, also sell out quickly.
In addition to Etsy, you can also find handmade cloth masks on other maker and craft sites, like Artfire and Ecrater.
If you're looking for a powerful power station that is fit for both indoor and outdoor use, it's hard to recommend anything other than the EGO Nexus with its 3,000 watts (W) peak, 2,000W continuous power. It is a beast that can run several heavy-duty appliances with no problem at all. You can even rely on this product to power a full-size fridge for several hours.
It's tough, robust and water resistant, even the sockets have a protection cover over them. However, like any power station of its capabilities, it is a heavy product. Despite using light lithium batteries, it weighs just a little over 44 pounds.
The exterior might appear futuristic, but the overall interface of the power station is very user friendly. You can even connect and control the station with your phone via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, which is not a common feature for portable power stations. Another feature that stands out is the four detachable batteries that can be swapped whenever you need. These batteries are especially useful if you have other products from the EGO ecosystem because they utilize the same power source.
The EGO Nexus has only three A/C plugs and four USB ports which is not a lot compared to other products, but it delivers clean, quiet, portable power reliably. Unsurprisingly, is the most expensive portable power station in the list, costing $999.00, but the power it supplies and the functions justify this price. It is an especially fair price when you compare it with other products with the same capabilities.
Pros: Battery capacity, can be controlled with your phone using Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, weather resistant, detachable batteries, user friendly LED display, in-depth instruction manual, reliable brand.
Cons: Large size and weight, not a lot of plugs and ports, need other products from the EGO ecosystem to make full use of some of its special features.
"What we do for a living, buying stakes in companies and working to make them more valuable, more efficient, more effective, I think it's great for the shareholders, I think it's great for the employees," Ackman told Bloomberg. "I think I can do some good with that, and it's also very profitable. So I like my day job."
Pershing Square's success made Ackman a billionaire. He first appeared on Forbes' billionaire's list in 2013.
