Neymar and Lionel Messi exchanged Christmas cheers on Brazilian TV.

Neymar has praised Lionel Messi, his former FC Barcelona team-mate, in a heartwarming Christmas message.

"Brother, for me you are an idol and also a great friend," Neymar said to Messi on Brazilian TV channel SBT.

The Paris Saint-German forward left Barça in a summer-long, headline-grabbing transfer earlier in the year. It was claimed at the time that Neymar's personal ambition was to win the World Player of the Year award - something he may only achieve once he escaped Messi's colossal shadow at the Camp Nou.

Any competitive rivalry Neymar and Messi may have for one another was kicked to the touchline, though, as the famous players embraced the festive spirit.

"We miss you here in Spain," said Messi.

"In fact, I'll always wish the best for you wherever you are and, sure enough, we will see each other soon, on or off the pitch. A big hug and take care of yourself."
