According to an Economic Times report, the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) on March 11 dispatched the Indian Institutes of Management Bill, 2015, to the Union Cabinet.

A senior ministry official told ET, "The proposed law is expected to come up for Cabinet approval before the budget session of Parliament resumes on April 20." It further added that the HRD ministry is keen to introduce this bill in the Lok Sabha in the second half of the budget session.

Whenever it came to getting education bills passed in the Parliament, HRD Minister Smriti Irani had always come out with flying colours. In the last 10 months, her ministry has managed to get three bills passed, the ET report said, adding that the IIM Bill could be considered first substantial education legislation by the BJP government.

The ET report said that at present an IIM alumnus has to request his or her respective institute to provide a certificate stating that the diploma is equivalent to an MBA degree in India. If this bill reaches its final stage, it will help India’s premier management institutes to attract more foreign students which is as of now limited to students of Indian origin.
