"Planet of the Apps" mentors Jessica Alba, Will.i.am, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Gary Vaynerchuk

  • Apple's second TV show, 'Planet of the Apps,' drew mixed reviews when it first became available for streaming last summer.
  • Now, one of the show's stars, Gary Vaynerchuk, is slamming the way Apple marketed the series.
  • "Apple didn't use me or Vayner to do the marketing, and did everything wrong. Apple!" he exclaimed on his podcast.

Outspoken entrepreneur Gary Vaynerchuk apparently did not like the way Apple marketed its game show about apps, "Planet of the Apps."

He discussed his thoughts about the almost-TV show he starred in during an Ask Gary Vee video published on Friday where he interviewed The Grill Dads, a Food Network hosting duo. About 26 minutes into the video, he started talking about his own series experience.

"I was on an Apple show, 'Planet of the Apps,' Gwyneth [Paltrow], Will[.i.am], Jessica Alba, and me. And Apple didn't use me or Vayner to do the marketing, and did everything wrong. Apple!" he exclaimed, talking about his eponymous marketing company.

"Planet of the Apps" was a reality TV-show broadcast on Apple Music, a streaming music service. It started airing in 2017 and ran for 10 episodes. The basic idea was that app developers would get advice and mentorship from one of the four stars and potentially even land funding for their app from Lightspeed Ventures.

Apple hasn't announced any viewer totals for the show, and the show got mixed reviews.

According to Vaynerchuk, one issue was that Apple messed up the marketing for the show - but he kept his mouth shut, despite the fact that marketing is his specialty.

"For all my bravado, I'm a real tough guy when it's in my home, this is my home, and every time I do content, it's my home. But when I'm at someone else's house, I was taught to show respect. You'd be blown away by the way I handled myself in the Apple marketing meetings," Vaynerchuk said.

"My cheeks were bleeding profusely out of every meeting, because I was biting them, my tongue completely fell out of my mouth," he continued.

He also complained that Jimmy Iovine, a top executive in Apple Music, wasn't involved enough. Iovine joined Apple as part of the $3 billion deal for Beats. He's taking a step back from daily involvement with Apple's streaming music business in August, according to The Wall Street Journal

"You're also there with Jimmy Iovine, Jimmy's like, 'I got it, we got it, we got it.' And I knew he wasn't in the trenches. I know Jimmy's no dope, clearly. But I was like, 'fuck this.'"

Despite his mixed feelings about how Apple handled the show, he had nothing but complimentary things to say about the rest of the A-list cast.

"Will's the best at music, and Jess is a gangster entrepreneur, and Gwyneth is like an all time actress, there's talent out there, but in the f------ business show, that was my f------ domain," Vaynerchuk said.

Representatives for Apple, Jimmy Iovine, and Gary Vaynerchuk didn't immediately respond to emails. Watch the entire clip below. It starts at about 27:00:
