Apply for the Amex Green card now to get up to $100 back on an eligible Away luggage purchase.
We're only a week and change into 2020, and there have already been huge waves in the credit card world. The Chase Sapphire Reserve is getting new benefits including DoorDash credits and perks with Lyft, and its annual fee is increasing by $100 to $550 on January 12.
If you want to earn 3x points on travel and dining but you don't want to pay a premium-level annual fee, the American Express Green card could be the alternative you're looking for. Like the Sapphire Reserve, it earns 3x points on travel and restaurant purchases, but it has a lower annual fee of $150.
If you apply for the Amex Green card by January 15, you can qualify for a limited-time offer: up to $100 back in the form of statement credits for eligible purchases made with Away luggage in your first three months from account opening. This could help you save money on a new checked bag or carry-on for your 2020 travel.
Keep in mind that we're focusing on the rewards and perks that make these credit cards great options, not things like interest rates and late fees, which will far outweigh the value of any points or miles. It's important to practice financial discipline when using credit cards by paying your balances in full each month, making payments on time, and only spending what you can afford to pay back.
In addition to the limited-time offer with Away, the Amex Green card is offering new cardholders 30,000 Amex Membership Rewards points after they spend $2,000 in purchases in the first three months from account opening. According to The Points Guy, 30,000 Amex points are worth $600 toward travel.
Save money on an Away bag
Away bags are known for their hardshell designs, and for offering built-in device charging in some models. Insider Picks even named the $225 Away carry-on the best carry-on luggage with phone-charging capability, and the team gave it props for the fun color options.
If you apply for the Amex Green card by January 15, you could reduce the price of the Away carry-on to $125 if you make the purchase with your new card in the first three months.
Other reasons to consider the Amex Green card
If you want an Away bag and you were already eyeing this card, you should seriously consider applying by January 15. But the Away statement credit isn't the only reason to consider this card.
