The 10 poorest candidates contesting phase two of the West Bengal Assembly Election

In the battle for Bengal, not everyone fighting has deep pockets. In fact, the poorest candidate in the second phase of the West Bengal Assembly Election 2021 only has assets worth ₹500, according to the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).

Among the ten poorest West Bengal Assembly Election 2021 candidates, five are from the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), two are independent and another two are from the Bahujan Mukti Party (BMP).

Unsurprisingly, only one candidate is from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and none are from the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) — the two giants who are fighting it out for the majority — even though their candidates feature heavily among the richest candidates.

For now, here’s a quick look at the top ten poorest candidates in West Bengal ahead of the polls:

BSP’s Sadhan Chattaraj will be contesting the West Bengal Assembly elections from Bankura this year. During the last elections, in 2016, he contested from Onda and lost.

This time Chattarah will be going up against TMC’s Sayantika Banerjee, BJP’s Niladri Sekhar Dana and Radha Rani Banerjee.

The odds are against him since Banerjee is part of Mamata Banerjee’s Tollywood squad and the incumbent is Congress’ Shampa Daripa.

Constituency: Katulpur (SC)

Haru Roy is fighting from Katulpur constituency, reserved for SC candidates. The 29-year old’s income comes from being a tuition teacher and agriculture. Roy has one criminal case pending against him with charges related to theft, criminal intimidation, and others under the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Roy is pitched against TMC’s Sangeeta Malik, BJP’s Harkali Patihar and Congress’ Akshay Santra.

Nirmal Kumar Dhara — ₹1,700

The 39-year old BJP candidate contesting the West Bengal election from Indas is a private tutor. He will be going up against TMC’s Runu Mete and CPI-M’s Nayan Sil.

Despite being from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party, it’s going to be a tough fight for him with TMC and CPI garnering most of the votes during the 2011 as BJP lagged behind in third position.

BSP’s Kamal Bag contested from Tamluk in 2014 and lost. This time the 41-year old is trying his luck in Purba Medinipur’s Moyna constituency. The primary source of his income is cultivation.

However the odds are stacked against him with his competitors being TMC’s Sangram Kumar Dolui, Congress’ Manik Bhownik and BJP’s Ashoke Dinde. Dinde is favoured to win with name recognition paying in his from his cricketing days.

Subrata Ghorai - ₹10,000

Like most of the candidates on this list, Subrata Ghorai’s income comes from agricultural activities. He will be going up against TMC’s Swapan Naskar, BJP’s Tapasi Mondal and CPI-M’s Manika Kar Paik.

Modal is the incumbent from Haldia, even though the last time she contested, her allegiance was with CPI-M.

The 30-year old Ramkrishna Maji is a private employee. He has ₹2,000 in cash and under ₹3,000 in his savings.

Contesting in Bankura’s Taldangra constituency, Maji will be fighting for the seat against TMC’s Arup Chakraborty, BJP’s Shyamal Kumar Sarkar and CPI-M’s Manoranjan Patra.

Also contesting in phase two of the West Bengal Assembly Elections from Taldangra is BMP’s Sanjay Bauri. Unlike his competitor, Ramkrishna Maji, Bauri contested in the 2016 elections as well and lost out.

According to his tax returns, Bauri has around ₹20,000 in cash and another ₹1,000 in savings.

Hulu Kshetrapal is one of the more elder candidates contesting in the second phase of the West Bengal Assembly Election 2021 at the age of 72 years. According to his tax returns, Kshetrapal has ₹21,000 in cash and only ₹31 in his savings.

He will be going up against TMC’s Sayantika Banerjee, BJP’s Niladri Sekhar Dana, and Congress’ Radha Rani Banerjee to win in Bankura.

Biswanath Ghorai — ₹22,000

This is the second time that BSP’s Biswanath Ghorai will be contesting the election from the Chandipur constituency. And, his competition does not plan on making it easy.

Ghorai is up against BJP’s Pulak Kanti Guriya, CPI-M’s Ashish Gucchait TMC’s Soham Chakraborty — who is a part of Mamata Banerjee’s Tollywood squad. The actor has appeared in over 100 Bengali films. Moreover, Chandipur has thus far been a TMC stronghold.
