Jangpura state assembly constituency is a part of the East Delhi parliamentary constituency of Delhi. The total number of voters in this constituency is 141994 with the number made of 78586 men, 63400 women and 8 third gender voters. Delhi assembly is presently ruled by AAP under the leadership of its chief Arvind Kejriwal. The present term of the Delhi assembly will close on 22 February 2020 and hence all the 70 constituencies of Delhi Vidhan Sabha along with Jangpura will go for general elections in February 2020 to select the next set of MLAs who will form the upcoming government post elections.

Jangpura assembly seat has existed since 1972. There had been nine assembly elections conducted so far in this seat. In the latest assembly polls conducted in 2015, the winning candidate was AAP’s Praveen Kumar who scored 43927 votes. The runner up candidate of BJP Maninder Singh Dhir scored 23477 votes and lost the seat. Earlier in 2013 elections, Maninder Singh had won from this seat representing the AAP and scoring 29701 votes. In this election, the runner up candidate was INC’s Tarvinder Singh Marwah who scored 27957 votes.

From 1998 till 2013, the MLA of this seat was Tarvinder Singh Marwah who won three elections in line conducted in 1998, 2003 and 2008. In these three elections, the runner up candidates were from the BJP. Tarvinder Singh Marwah’s vote scores in these elections were 28384, 32937, and 37261 respectively. Before the AAP snatched this seat from the Congress party, this seat had been a stronghold of INC from 1972 except in 1977 elections when JNP won from this seat.
