In 2015 elections, AAP candidate Avtar Singh Kalkaji won this seat by scoring 55104 votes against the BJP candidate who got 35335 votes. In 2013 elections, the winner was BJP’s Harmeet Singh who got 30683 votes and won over the AAP candidate Dharambir Singh who scored 28639 votes. In the 2008 elections, the winner of this seat was Subash Chopra who represented the INC and won this seat with 38360 votes. The runner up in this election was Jai Gopal Abrol of BJP who got 24971 votes.

Kalkaji is a State Assembly constituency that comes within the portals of the South Delhi parliamentary seat of Delhi. The present five year term of the ruling party AAP will end on 22 February 2020. Hence Kalkaji will go for general elections along with the other 69 assembly seats of Delhi. The upcoming elections in February 2020 will choose the set of MLAs who will represent these constituencies in the Delhi Vidhan Sabha. In total, there are 164239 voters in this constituency with the count including 92022 men, 72206 women and 11 third gender voters.

In both 2003 elections and 1998 elections, the winner and the runner up were Subash Chopra of INC and Purnima Sethi of BJP respectively. Their vote counts were 35721 and 18077 respectively in 2003 elections. In 1998 elections, Subhash Chopra got 29948 and Purnima Sethi got 24704 votes respectively. In 1993, Purnima Sethi represented the BJP and won over Subhash Chopra who represented the INC. In 1972 elections, V.P. Singh of INC won the BJS candidate S P Bannerji.
