Mehrauli state assembly constituency occurs within the jurisdiction of South Delhi parliamentary constituency of Delhi. There are a total number of 181305 voters in this seat with the figure including 103227 men, 78062 women and 16 third gender voters. The present ruling term of the Delhi state government will end on 22 February 2020 and hence all the 70 assembly constituencies in Delhi will go for general elections to select the MLAs who will form the upcoming government post elections. Mehrauli is a general constituency open for all contestants.

In the 2015 elections conducted for the Delhi assembly, AAP candidate Naresh Yadav won the seat scoring 51825 votes against the BJP candidate who scored 41174 votes. In 2013 assembly polls, Parvesh Sahib Singh of BJP won from this seat scoring 37481 votes against the AAP candidate Narinder Singh Sejwal who got 32917 votes. This assembly constituency has been in existence since 1951. Since then, the Mehrauli assembly seat had seen 10 assembly elections. In all the ten elections, INC had won four times, BJP had won four times, and JNP and AAP had won one time each.

INC held this seat over two terms consecutively till 1977 elections. In 1977 and 1983 elections for the Delhi assembly, Kalka Dass won from here first time representing JNP and the second time representing BJP. Bhram Singh Tanwar of BJP held this seat during two consecutive terms in 1993 and 1998. Balram Tanwar and Yoganand Shastri of INC held this seat in two consecutive terms in 2003 and 2008 elections.
