During the last assembly elections conducted in this constituency for the Vidhan Sabha, Som Dutt of AAP won the seat by bagging 67,507 votes. The runner up during the election was BJP’s Parveen Jain who scored 33,192 votes. The vote score of 67,507 won by AAP candidate Som Dutt was the highest ever any winning MLA got from this constituency.

Sadar Bazar Vidhan Sabha constituency of Delhi falls within the precincts of North Delhi parliamentary seat. Along with the other 69 assembly constituencies of Delhi, Sadar Bazar will also go for assembly election polls in February 2020 as the five year term of the present AAP government ruling the Delhi Vidhan Sabha will end on 22 February 2020. The total number of voters in this constituency is 1,65,870 with the break up working out to 90,763 males, 75,099 females and 8 third gender voters.

Som Dutt representing the AAP was selected for the Delhi assembly from Sadar Bazar in two consecutive elections in 2013 and 2015. In 2013 elections, he scored 34,079 votes against the BJP candidate Jai Parkash who won 33,283 votes. Rajesh Jain of INC was the longest MLA from this assembly constituency who remained in office for three full terms by winning the 1998, 2003 and 2008 assembly elections from here. In all these elections, BJP candidates were the runner ups. During all the past five consecutive elections, BJP candidates came in the second place and could not make it to the Delhi assembly from this seat.
