The last assembly elections in this constituency were held in 2015. During the said elections, Bandana Kumari of the AAP emerged victoriously securing 62656 votes. She defeated BJP’s Rekha Gupta who scored 51678 votes. Bandana Kumari of AAP was elected for the Delhi assembly from this seat during two elections held in 2013 and 2105. In both these elections, the runner up candidates were from the BJP.

Shalimar Bagh assembly constituency of Delhi Vidhan Sabha occurs within the jurisdiction of Chandni Chowk Lok Sabha seat in Delhi. The five year term of the present ruling party comes to an end in February 2020 and hence Delhi assembly will go for polls in February 2020 to select the next government that will rule for the next five years. Shalimar Bagh will also go for polls along with the other 69 constituencies in the Delhi Vidhan Sabha. The total number of voters in this constituency is 174397. The split up of this figure works out to 94144 men, 80243 women and 10 third gender voters.

Before Bandana Kumari became the MLA to represent this constituency, Ravinder Nath Bansal was selected for the Delhi assembly from this seat for three consecutive terms. Hence he remained in the office for fifteen years in total from 1998 to 2013. In all these three elections he defeated the INC candidates with a good margin of votes. In 1993 elections, BJP had won this seat. So, till AAP came into picture in 2013, this seat was the stronghold of BJP for quite long.
