New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Thursday that because of the novel coronavirus, the city's popular outdoor public pools will remain closed this summer.

For those hoping to escape the heat at the beaches instead, the mayor warned residents to "lower expectations, just for everyone's sanity."

A decision had not yet been made, but "the notion of having lifeguards, and people coming to the beach like normal, we don't have that in our sights yet," he said.

New York City is currently the epicenter of the U.S. coronavirus outbreak. Confirmed cases have skyrocketed too 111,424 over the course of the outbreak, according to the city government.

The pool closures aren't just a public safety measure. A budget proposed by de Blasio's office on Thursday indicated that shuttering the more than 50 outdoors pools will save the city about $12 million. Overall, the mayor has proposed $2 billion in cuts to the city budget.
