'No one has forgotten': Meghan McCain slams Trump's 'tribute' for American prisoners of war

Meghan McCain, co-host of ABC's "The View" and the daughter of Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona, made it clear to President Donald Trump that his remarks about the late senator still reverberated.

Her comments on Thursday comes as Trump declared April 9 as the National Former Prisoner of War Recognition Day in honor of Americans who were captured by enemy combatants during a time of war.

"Though we can never fully understand the depth of their brutal imprisonment and mistreatment, as Americans, it is our duty to ensure all former POWs receive the love, care, compassion, appreciation, and support they deserve," Trump's said in a proclamation.

Trump added in a tweet on Thursday that, "We pay tribute to these Patriots for their unwavering and unrelenting spirit!"

Meghan, who has long criticized Trump's rhetoric, repeated the president's previous comments about her father in a tweet.

"'John McCain is not a "war hero,'" she tweeted. "'He is a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren't captured, let me tell you.'"

"No one has forgotten this is how you honor POW's," Meghan added.

Following Trump's similar declaration in 2019, Meghan also tweeted at the time, "No one believes you care about prisoners of war and 'people who get captured.'"

Trump frequently disparaged McCain's military service in the Navy and his political career. McCain died after a long battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer in August 2018.

"He's not a war hero," Trump said in 2015, referring to the late senator's military tenure. "He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren't captured."

McCain served over 20 years in the US Navy after graduating from the US Naval Academy. He was a pilot and participated in the Vietnam War, where he was shot down and taken prisoner for over five years.

McCain frequently criticized Trump during the first year and a half of his presidency. After Trump's controversial performance at a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2018, McCain described it as "one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in memory."

McCain also denounced Trump's repeated attacks on the press: "Trump continues his unrelenting attacks on the integrity of American journalists and news outlets," McCain wrote in an opinion column. "This has provided cover for repressive regimes to follow suit."
