• On Wednesday, December 18, the House of Representatives voted to pass two articles of impeachment charging President Donald Trump with abusing his office and obstructing Congress.

On Wednesday, December 18, the House of Representatives voted to pass two articles of impeachment charging President Donald Trump with abusing his office and obstructing Congress.

The House passed the abuse of power article by a vote of 230 to 197 to 1 and the obstruction of Congress article by a vote of 229 to 198 to 1.

While the House is allocated 435 total seats, four House seats are currently vacant, and Rep. Duncan Hunter of California lost his voting privileges as a result of pleading guilty to a federal crime. Republican Rep. Jim Shimkus of Illinois, who is retiring after this term, skipped the impeachment vote and was the only absent Member of Congress not to vote at all on the articles.

The vote fell almost entirely along party lines, with every voting-eligible House Republican and two Democrats, Rep. Collin Peterson of Minnesota and Rep. Jeff Van Drew of New Jersey, voting against both articles. While Van Drew is expected to switch to the Republican Party in the next week, he voted against both articles as a Democrat.

One Democratic Congressman, Jared Golden of Maine, split his vote in favor of the abuse of power article but against the obstruction article, and Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii also voted present on both articles.

Every other Democratic member and the House's lone Independent, Rep. Justin Amash of Michigan, voted in favor of both articles.
