Jeff Bezos congratulates president-elect Biden, saying Americans 'proved again our democracy is strong'

Amazon's chief executive Jeff Bezos congratulated President- and Vice-President-elect Joe Biden and Kamala Harris on Saturday, while taking a subtle jab at President Trump.

"Unity, empathy, and decency are not characteristics of a bygone era. Congratulations President-elect @JoeBiden and Vice President-elect @KamalaHarris," Bezos said in an Instagram post. "By voting in record numbers, the American people proved again that our democracy is strong."

Biden's projection to win the election, called by major US media outlets shortly before Bezos' post, is likely a mixed result for the US' third-largest company by market value. While a Democratic president and House raise the specter of possible regulatory actions that began during Trump's term, a split government with Republicans likely to maintain their hold on the Senate may lower those chances, analysts say.

For years, Trump has also publicly projected a personal vendetta against Bezos, accusing his firm of ripping off the Postal Service and his newspaper — the Washington Post — of being, like many of its counterparts, fake news. He also publicly mocked Bezos' divorce, calling him "Jeff Bozo."

But the insults didn't stop Bezos from joining the White House's tech council in 2017 or from offering advice alongside other executives on an economic recovery plan in April, even as Amazon publicly criticized the administration's decision to leave the Paris Climate Accord.

Other business leaders offered similar reactions to Biden's win.

"I look forward to working with the new administration and leaders on both sides in Congress on getting the surging pandemic under control, engaging partners around the world on issues like poverty and climate change, and addressing issues of inequality and opportunity at home," Microsoft founder Bill Gates said on Twitter.

Jamie Dimon, chief executive of JPMorgan Chase, the US' largest bank by assets, said that "no matter our political views, let's come together to strengthen our exceptional country."
