The races and the stakes:

US Senate

Democratic Sen. Maggie Hassan is running for reelection to a second term.

In 2016, Hassan narrowly defeated then-Republican Sen. Kelly Ayotte, winning by 1,017 votes out of roughly 708,000 ballots cast in one of the most competitive races in the country that year.

While Hassan was expected to face popular GOP Gov. Chris Sununu, he decided against a Senate bid late last year and is instead seeking a fourth term as governor of the Granite State.

Hassan was thought to be vulnerable — due to the closeness of her first race and the high enthusiasm among Republican voters this year — but she failed to attract a high-profile GOP opponent and has boasted a huge fundraising advantage over any of her potential opponents.

The candidates in the GOP primary include state Senate President Chuck Morse, retired Army Brig. Gen. Don Bolduc, Londonderry town manager Kevin Smith, cryptocurrency investor Bruce Fenton, and businessman Vikram Mansharamani.

In the most recent University of New Hampshire survey, Bolduc had a 21-point lead over Morse (43%-21%), with Fenton and Mansharamani both receiving 5% support and Smith at 3% support.

While Bolduc is popular among the conservative base, some Republicans have feared that he would be unable to defeat Hassan, who is well-known from her tenure as governor and has sought bipartisanship while in Washington, DC.

Last week, Sununu endorsed Morse, a longtime fixture in the state legislature and the preferred candidate of many establishment Republicans.

Governor

Sununu, the most prominent Republican in the state, is hoping to secure another gubernatorial term in Concord.

Corey Lewandowski, who at one point managed Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign, said during a radio interview earlier this year that the former president thought it "would be really great if somebody would run against" the governor.

Sununu has five challengers — businessmen Julian Acciard and Thad Riley, conservative activist Karen Testerman, professional logger Richard McMenamon II, and biker Jay Lewis.

Democrats are set to tap state Sen. Tom Sherman as their nominee.

The GOP primary is crowded, with a range of candidates that include Matt Mowers — a ex-State Department official under former President Donald Trump — along with state Rep. Tim Baxter, former Trump White House assistant press secretary Karoline Leavitt, and former television reporter Gail Huff Brown.

Brown is the wife of former Sen. Scott Brown of Massachusetts, who in 2012 lost his bid for reelection to Elizabeth Warren and moved to New Hampshire, where in 2014 he unsuccessfully challenged Democrat Jeanne Shaheen for the Senate.

2nd District

Democratic Rep. Annie Kuster is running for reelection to a sixth term.

Candidates running in the GOP primary include Keene Mayor George Hansel and former Hillsborough County Treasurer Robert Burns.

State legislative primaries

The New Hampshire House of Representatives and New Hampshire Senate are both currently controlled by Republicans.

All of the seats in the legislature are up for grabs this fall.
