In the first term of the Modi government too, Paswan held the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution. Earlier in his long political tenure he has held the ministerial position for various other ministries like Chemicals and Fertilizers, Mines, Communications and Information Technology and also Ministry of Railways.

Paswan is a eight-time Lok Sabha MP as well as a former Rajya Sabha MP. Paswan is the president of the Lok Janshakti Party. Paswan did not contest the Lok Sabha elections in 2019, which came as a surprising news as he has been contesting elections from 1977 (from Bihar’s Hajipur constituency).

It was reported that his son Chirag Paswan, who is a MP from the Jamui constituency of Bihar could be the one to hold a ministerial position as the Modi government comes back to power for the second time. However, junior Paswan had recently denied the reports to say that he was not taking up a ministerial position in the Modi cabinet.
