Red Alert Constituency In First Phase Election
Politics15 min read
The country is moving eagerly to vote for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The first phase of polling is scheduled across the country on April 11, 2019. During the first phase of the seven phased elections, 91 constituencies will go for polling.

Many interesting statistics are coming up regarding the constituencies, parties and candidates. Among the 91 constituencies, 37 are identified as red alert constituencies. If you are wondering what a red alert constituency would mean, the answer is as simple as that. A red alert constituency is one in which 3 or more of the candidates contesting have made a self-declaration of criminal cases against themselves. This analysis does not include the independent candidates contesting in the elections in a given constituency.

The analysis to identify red alert constituencies takes into account the affidavits filed by the contesting candidates before the election commission while filing their nomination. The candidates need to make a declaration of the crimes they have been convicted for. These crimes might be as severe as murders, kidnapping and crimes against women. If the candidates fail to declare the criminal convictions against them, there are chances that they will be disqualified from contesting in the elections if the election commission finds it out during scrutiny of applications. Fearing this most candidates will declare the criminal convictions against them.

Here is a list of 31 red alert constituencies going for polling during the first phase (April 11, 2019) with the number of candidates and the list of parties fielding candidates with criminal cases.
