Dick's Sporting Goods is bucking the store closures trend by opening 11 new locations this month

As retailers plan to close an estimated 6,000 stores across the US by the end of the year, Dick's Sporting Goods is bucking the trend and debuting 11 new locations by the end of August.

The openings include four traditional Dick's Sporting Goods stores, one Dick's Sporting Goods and Golf Galaxy store, four Dick's Sporting Goods Warehouse Sale locations, and one Overtime store.

Overtime and Warehouse are two new concepts for the company. Locations for each first opened in June. Overtime stores are outlets that sell sports apparel and equipment at up to 75% off, while Dick's Sporting Goods Warehouses are temporary stores with even deeper discounts.

At the beginning of June, Dick's reported that consolidated same-store sales had fallen by 29.5% in the first quarter, thanks to coronavirus-related store closures. At the same time, it said that e-commerce sales grew 110% in the quarter, including sales from its curbside contactless pickup services.

Demand for clothing and equipment for outdoor activities has surged this summer as evidence has indicated that, when it comes to spreading the coronavirus, doing things outside could be less risky than remaining indoors.

With a growing e-commerce presence and options for curbside pickup, Dick's is poised to benefit from the trend while promoting shopper safety.

The new Dick's Sporting Goods stores will host ribbon-cutting ceremonies on their opening weekends.
