The fate of some of Walmart's Chicago-area stores is up in the air.

Several stores in the area, including Walmart Supercenter locations and grocery-focused Neighborhood Markets, were damaged by looting in the past couple weeks.

Walmart is now in the process of assessing the damage, and has not yet decided whether it will reopen all locations that were impacted, a company spokesperson told Business Insider on Tuesday.

"We are still assessing the damage," the Walmart spokesperson said. "No decision has been made."

Crain's Chicago Business previously reported that Walmart may not reopen all its stores in the area.

Walmart said it has reopened one store that was not among those damaged by looting.

"We are proud to re-open our Pullman store and serve the community once again," the Walmart spokesperson said, referring to a store located at 10900 S. Doty Ave. in Chicago.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said she is hoping Walmart reopens its damaged stores.

"My hope is that they will come back," Lightfoot told WBBM News Radio. "But I got a resounding, 'Mayor, this is our city, this is our home,' from a lot of other retailers and I would hope that Walmart would follow suit."

The mayor's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
