The Czech Republic declared a state of emergency and closed its borders to 13 countries including European neighbours like the United Kingdom in a bid to combat the spread of coronavirus.

The Czech government on Thursday said that people from 13 countries including the UK, Italy, Germany, Spain and France would not be allowed to enter the country for a period lasting 30 days.

It also banned its own citizens from traveling to the listed countries, effectively shutting down its borders with the rest of Europe.

Social hubs where large numbers of people gather like gyms, libraries, and swimming pools will be closed at all times during the 30-day state of emergency, while bars and restaurants will have restricted opening hours.

The Czech Republic has 96 confirmed cases of the COVID-19 virus on Thursday afternoon, with no deaths.
