This communication satellite is built by ISRO for NewSpace India Limited (NSIL). It is the first satellite configured and built by ISRO but owned, operated, and funded by NSIL for commercial users.
Established in 2019, NewSpace India Limited is a public sector enterprise and commercial arm of ISRO. The NSIL was set up to build to take up high technology space-related activities in India.

GSAT-24 is a 24-Ku band communication satellite weighing 4180 kg.
NSIL has leased the entire satellite capacity (DTH) to Tata Play.
The satellite aims to provide high-quality telecommunications and broadcasting services. It will also meet the DTH needs of Indian customers.
GSAT-24 was launched on-board Ariane-V VA257 flight from the Guiana Space Centre.
According to NSIL, once GSAT-24 is operational, it will enhance television viewing by providing more DTH channels and more HD channels.
NSIL is planning to launch three passenger satellites for Singapore from Sriharikota. These satellites will be launched using Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV).
