Kargil Diwas: Fast facts about Indian Army's win against Pakistan's infiltrators in 1999

The war was fought between India and Pakistan in Kargil — a hill town located at 8,780 feet in Jammu and Kashmir in India — between May and July in 1999.

The soldiers had to fight the war at biting temperatures of minus 10°C.

Indian Army launched “Operation Vijay” to throw the Pakistani Army out of Line-of-Control after they captured Kargil sector on the Indian side.

Indian Air Force launched Operation Safed Sagar to support the Army. This was the first time that the Air Force conducted an operation at the height of 32,000 above the sea level. The pilots and engineers were given only a week to train for the operation.

The Tiger Hill victory was a turning point in the battle. Pakistani soldiers were placed at high hills. The biggest challenge for the Indian Army was to cross the hill overnight and fight them.

As many as 527 of India’s brave soldiers laid their lives on the line of duty. Indian Army also built a memorial wall with all the names of the soldiers who lost their lives during the war.

On July 26, 1999, Operation Vijay was officially declared successful, after months of the war.
