After Bain secured the win over Mike Krzyzewski's Blue Devils at Cameron Indoor Stadium, donations to the page skyrocketed and have far exceeded the initial goal.

Hitting a last-second, game-winning shot on one of the biggest stages in college basketball is every player's dream.

But for Stephen F. Austin senior Nathan Bain, hitting the upset-clinching shot to take down No. 1 Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium wasn't even the best part of his Tuesday night.

Bain, who came to the small Texas school by way of the Bahamas, has family back in Freeport, Grand Bahama. They lost "nearly everything of value" to the destruction caused by Hurricane Dorian at the end of August. Bain's father, a minister, also saw his church suffer extreme damage as well.

In response to the tragedy, one of the university's compliance officers set up a GoFundMe account on the Bain family's behalf. After a few weeks, donations tapered off just under $3,000.

Until Bain channeled his inner David and toppled college basketball's Goliath.

In the past half-day, that same GoFundMe page has raised more than $50,000 to help support the Bain family in rebuilding their home and church. And even though many of the donors are using the comment section to applaud the senior forward for his role in upsetting head coach Mike Krzyzewski's Blue Devils, the Bain family's cause is one that transcends sports rivalries and grudges.

"I'm trying real hard not to get emotional," Bain said after the game. "My family lost a whole lot this year and I'm just playing this game for them... I just want to make my country proud."
