Swapnil Kusale has won the bronze medal in the men's 50m Rifle 3 Positions event. - This is India’s third medal at the Paris Olympics 2024, all of which have come in shooting
- Kusale has become the first Indian to win an Olympic medal in the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions event.
Yukun Liu of China won the gold, while Serhiy Kulish of Ukraine won the silver medal. China’s Liu had created the world record with a mark of 468.9 in May 2024 in Baku.
Swapnil Kusale wins bronze
Kusale scored 451.4 points to secure the third position and has become the first Indian to win an Olympic medal in the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions event.In the qualification round, Kusale finished seventh with a total score of 590-38x, securing his place in the final.
The 50m rifle 3 positions final includes three rounds of 15 shots each. After 15 shots in kneeling, prone, and standing positions, the elimination round is conducted to decide the winner.
As mentioned earlier, all three medals that India has won have come from shooting. Manu Bhaker opened India’s tally with a bronze medal in the women’s 10m air pistol event and then Bhaker won a second bronze medal along with Sarabjot Singh in the 10m air pistol mixed team event.
This is the first time India has won more than two medals in a single sport at a single Olympic Games, making it the best-ever performance from shooting for India.
Who is Swapnil Kusale?
Swapnil Kusale was born on February 8, 1995, in Pune, Maharashtra in an agricultural family. Initially drawn to cricket, Kusale discovered his passion for shooting in his early teens. Encouraged by his family, particularly his father, who recognised his potential, Kusale began his training in shooting.He has been a part of the Indian shooting contingent for several years and has consistently performed well in national and international competitions.
Kusale works as a Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) with the Pune Railway Division.
In 2015, Kusale won a gold medal in the 50m rifle prone 3 event in the junior category at the Asian Shooting Championships held in Kuwait.
