A week ahead of the men’s IPL, the Royal Challengers Bangalore Women (RCB Women) team won the Women’s Premier League (WPL) against Delhi Capitals Women (DC Women) on Sunday.

End a 16-year wait for trophy

The RCB Women have ended a 16-year wait for a trophy for the RCB camp. RCB, one of the original teams that has been playing since 2008, had played three finals in the men’s IPL but had failed to win even a single championship before RCB Women won the title.

After restricting DC Women to 113 runs, RCB Women won the match by eight wickets, with three balls remaining.

Sophie Molineux takes three wickets in an over

DC got a good start with 64 runs in the first seven overs with zero wickets before Australian star spinner and all-rounder Sophie Molineux took three important wickets in the eighth over. She sent back the opener Shafali Verma, Jemimah Rodrigues and Alice Capsey, including two ducks.

Openers lead the chase with Ellysse Perry as backup

RCB openers, Smriti Mandhana and Sophie Devine led the chase, with Ellysse Perry coming in after Devine’s exit. The three players scored over 30 runs each, helping the team secure a smooth win.

RCB batter Elysse Perry wins the orange cap

Ellysse Perry won the orange cap in WPL 2024 after scoring 347 runs in nine matches with a high score of 66 runs. Smriti Mandhana was in the fourth position with 300 runs scored in 10 matches.

RCB Women took the first three spots in leading wicket-takers, with Shreyanka Patil taking 13 wickets in 8 matches, Asha Shobana taking 12 wickets in 10 matches and Sophie Molineux taking 12 wickets in 10 matches.

Soon after the RCB Women won the title, former RCB men’s team skipper Virat Kohli, who has been with the franchise since the inception of IPL in 2008, congratulated the team on a video call.

The RCB captain Smriti Mandhana had a message for the team’s loyal fanbase. “One statement that always comes up is Ee Sala Cup Namde. Now it's Ee Sala Cup Namdu,” she said, referring to the popular tagline that loosely translates to ‘This time the cup is ours’.
