India announces World Cup squad

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently announced the 15-man squad for the upcoming ODI World Cup. The team, which will be led by Rohit Sharma includes Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav and others.

Ashwin, Chahal not included

At the same time, a few players like Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal have not made the cut. In this post, we look at some of India's important white ball players who were not included in the ODI World Cup squad.

Yuzvendra Chahal

Leg Spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has been excluded from India’s Asia Cup and World Cup squads. Chahal, who has not played an ODI since January 2023 has decent numbers in the format. Since 2022, he has taken 24 wickets in 14 matches.

Ravichandran Ashwin

Ravichandran Ashwin, one of India’s key spinners, hasn’t made it to the World Cup 2023 squad either. He played only two matches in 2022 and took 1 wicket. However, the off spinner has had a better run in T20s and Test cricket and has also contributed with the bat in those formats.

Sanju Samson

Wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson, who has an average of over 55 in ODIs will also miss the World Cup bus. He makes way for KL Rahul, who is returning from an injury. Samson has played 12 ODIs since 2022 and has scored 344 runs.

Shikhar Dhawan

Senior batsman Shikhar Dhawan has not been included in the World Cup squad either despite being a key player in 2015 and 2019 editions. Dhawan scored 688 runs in 22 ODIs for India in 2022.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who took 10 wickets in 6 matches in the 2019 World Cup, has failed to find a spot in the current squad. He has only played 2 matches since 2022 and failed to pick a wicket in those matches.

Deepak Hooda

All-rounder Deepak Hooda, who made his ODI debut in 2022, has been left out of the squad. He has played 10 matches since his debut and scored 153 runs.

Prasidh Krishna

Prasidh Krishna, who returned from injury and got a call for the Asia Cup, has been left out of the mega ODI tournament. The young pacer played 11 matches in 2022 and took 19 wickets. During this period, Krishna also took a 4-wicket haul.
