This year, it’s not onions that are making Indians cry in the kitchen as this time, potatoes, tomatoes and pulses are enjoying their share of making Indians lose their appetite, and sleep.
Surge pricing of all these food items commonly used in Indian homes has ruined the family budgets of Indian lower and middle classes.
Talking of pulses, arhar prices have doubled in the last two years while urad prices have increased by around 120%. Not to forget, price of chana dal, which is produced in abundance, have also climbed by 85%.
Even though last year’s drought had given a hint about increased prices of pulses, there was no significant effort from the government’s side to build stocks to control prices.

Coming to potatoes and tomatoes, the case there is slightly different, given that they are shorter duration crops, but both are seeing surge prices.
Even though tomato farming is not completely dependent on rains, and yet, prices of tomatoes have surged.
