Amazfit T-Rex 2smartwatch that will help you decide whether you should buy the smartwatch or not.
AdvertisementAmazfit recently released its latest rugged outdoor smartwatch, the T-Rex 2, in India. It is the successor of the T-Rex and the T-Rex Pro rugged smartwatches launched in India in 2020.
The T-Rex 2 promises to be a durable watch, packing in a wide range of features, but one of the highlights is the larger display compared to its predecessor, the T-Rex Pro. It boasts 10 ATM water resistance and can survive in extreme temperatures, making it a good companion even in tough terrains.
This seems like a lot for a smartwatch that costs ₹15,999, but relying only on on-paper features and specs is not enough, so I put the T-Rex 2 to test over the past few days. My detailed review will help you decide whether you should consider the Amazfit T-Rex 2 as your next fitness companion.
Amazfit T-Rex 2 – price and availability
The Amazfit T-Rex 2 has been priced at ₹15,999 and is available from Amazon India, Amazfit online store, and Helios stores across the country. It comes in Astro Black and Gold, Desert Khaki, Ember Black, and Wild Green color options.
The company currently offers a free gym bag worth ₹1,999 to users ordering the smartwatch from its website.
Amazfit T-Rex 2 – rugged design
Amazfit smartwatches usually sport rugged designs that make them ideal for indoor and outdoor scenarios. The T-Rex 2 is not a fashion accessory by any means – it is not intended to be – but it looks decent despite its rugged avatar.
If you are someone who does not like a rugged design and prefer a minimalistic design like the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active, the T-Rex 2 is not the correct choice for you. If you are a fan of sporty watches like the G-Shock series, you will be a fan of the T-Rex 2.
The silicone straps are airy, lightweight, and skin-friendly, so you can wear the watch for long hours. Overall, the T-Rex 2 weighs 67 grams, which is good enough considering the display size, the battery capacity, and the sensors it comes with.
It has two buttons on each side, allowing you to operate several functions on the watch quickly. You won’t even touch the display once you get used to the interface. This becomes useful, especially if you wear gloves or do not want to touch the display.
If you have paid attention to fitness-oriented smartwatches out there, you might have guessed that the T-Rex 2 looks familiar. While that is not necessarily bad, the emphasis on the screws and the branding choice makes the watch look a little bigger than it could have been. Due to this, it may not be a good option for users with small hands.
Durability is another area where the T-Rex 2 shines. It features 10ATM water resistance and STD-MIL-810G certification, making it an excellent option for users who like to explore. It can withstand extreme temperatures, from -40-degree to all the way up to 70-degree Celsius.
The watch is quite durable, and we found this after the watch survived quite a few knocks during our testing without getting a single scratch.
Amazfit T-Rex 2 – big display and fast GPS
The Amazfit T-Rex 2 sports a bigger 1.39-inch AMOLED display that is bright enough even in direct sunlight. It is responsive, and users with thick fingers should be able to use it comfortably. The AMOLED display is a big improvement over its predecessor and offers beautiful colors.
Amazfit’s custom Zepp OS has also seen refinements, both in terms of the UI and usability – it is one of the few smartwatch operating systems out there which don’t feel clunky and laggy despite not running WearOS, watchOS or Samsung’s own implementation, which is now a mix of Tizen and WearOS.
Regarding features, the T-Rex 2 supports heart rate monitoring, blood oxygen saturation, and stress level, among other things, thanks to its new biometric sensor.
The watch comes with a PPG heart rate sensor that can track your blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) and your stress levels, an important metric to track your mental health during your hectic day.
One of the highlights of the watch is the dual-band five-satellite GPS. During my testing, I found the watch to be quite accurate, and it could connect to the GPS quickly. There were no GPS dropouts during my testing, so you don’t have to worry about an inaccurate workout route.
The watch also comes with a compass and a barometric altimeter, which help identify your location and altitude.
Amazfit T-Rex 2 – performance and battery life
During my testing, I compared the Amazfit T-Rex 2 to a certified pulse oximeter and found that the blood oxygen saturation readings and pulse readings by the T-Rex 2 were accurate.
The new one-tap measuring feature works well and reveals your heart rate, stress levels, blood oxygen saturation, and breath rate in just 45 seconds, giving you a quick overview of your health levels. This will allow you to keep track of some of the vital stats throughout the day by spending less than a minute each time. Do note that you will have to stay still during the testing.
The Amazfit T-Rex 2 offers over 150 sports modes and comes with something for everyone. It offers common modes such as walking, running, treadmill, cycling, hiking, rowing machine, snowboarding, skiing, and more.
The sleep tracking on the watch works well and provides a detailed analysis of your sleep patterns and levels. If you are worried about your sleep patterns and are hoping for more information about them.
One of the main things you need to consider while purchasing a smartwatch is its battery life. The T-Rex 2 is equipped with a 500mAh battery, which is claimed to offer up to 24 days of battery life with typical usage and up to 45 days on battery saver mode.
During my testing, I turned on features such as raise to wake and changed the frequency of heart rate monitoring to 1 minute. With several notifications and regular workouts, the watch delivered a battery life of over two weeks, which I found to be quite excellent.
AdvertisementThe watch comes with a charger with magnetic pins that takes around 2 hours to fully charge the watch.
Zepp is the companion app that you will need to install to sync your data and manage the watch. It is available for both Android and iOS devices. The app has a clean interface and allows you to easily access your workout data and health information and manage the watch settings.
The Amazfit T-Rex 2 is an amazing smartwatch with a wide range of features at an attractive price point. The watch comes out on top in terms of the display, battery life, accuracy and is even comfortable to wear for extended duration.
At the end of the day, it boils down to whether you are looking for something with a sporty design. The watch does have issues such as the bulky design, lack of support for third-party apps, and absence of storage.
If you are in the market for a rugged smartwatch with excellent battery life, the Amazfit T-Rex 2 is an excellent option.
