Yesterday, Google sent the tech world into a tizzy by launching Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL devices along with Pixelbook Go, Nest Mini and Nest Wi-Fi router at New York. But Indians tech lovers have nothing to be happy about as they will not be launched in India.

Google also said that the Pixel 4 series will not be launched in India. While there is no official word on the reasons, the buzz is that the hardware that is used by the tech major has a radar which works only for a range of spectrum.

In India, a large part of telecom spectrum rests with the defence ministry. It holds the right to release spectrum for auctions and allocation. The radar hardware used in these smartphones will need to use a spectrum that is not yet permitted for public use.

So a user who might travel to the US with plans of ‘unlocking’ it to function in India, might face issues.

The very feature that has kept these devices out of India is their main highlight-- Motion sense gestures powered by Google’s Project Soli radar. This allows the device to precisely detect hand gestures irrespective of lighting conditions. It operates at the 60GHz frequency and can also detect gestures through plastic.

Motion Gestures will allow users to change music tracks on their device just by waving their hands left or right, silence phone calls and alarms, turn on the screen to check for notifications or turn off the screen with a wave.

Even if Google Pixel 4 is launched in India, it would be occupied a premium range. The Google Pixel 4 is priced at $799 (which comes to ₹57,170 for the 64GB storage variant. It will cost the users $899 or ₹64,330 for the 128GB variant.

The premium Pixel 4 XL is priced at $899 or ₹64,330 for the 64GB storage variant and $999 or ₹71,470 approx for the 128GB storage variant.

The Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL are identical in terms of design and the major difference is only in terms of screen size and battery capacity. The phones are available in Just Black, Clearly White and Limited Edition Oh So Orange.

Google Pixel 4, Pixel 4 XL specifications


The Google Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL run Android 10 out of the box and Google has promised that the devices will get three years of security and OS updates.

They are powered by the octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset coupled with Adreno 640 GPU. Unlike many new phones with three and even four cameras, these devices have dual camera setup at the back. It includes a 12.2-megapixel primary camera with Sony IMX363 sensor, 1.4μm pixel size, ƒ/1.7 aperture, dual PD autofocus, EIS, OIS and a 16-megapixel Telephoto lens with Sony IMX481 sensor, 1μm pixel size and f/2.4 aperture.

The Pixel 4 is powered by a 2,800mAh battery and the Pixel 4 XL is powered by a 3,700mAh battery. Both the devices support 18W fast charging and Qi wireless charging and Google has said that the devices will ship with a 18W fast charger in the box.
