OnePlus announced a new feature called Optimized charging. As the name suggests, this feature optimizes the way your OnePlus smartphone is charged. Once enabled, you can charge your OnePlus smartphone overnight without worrying about overcharging it.

The feature was first spotted last year. Now, OnePlus is officially rolling it out in the latest OxygenOS beta update for the OnePlus 7 and the OnePlus 7 Pro. Other OnePlus smartphones should get this feature in a future update, but it is not clear how long it will take.

What is Optimized Charging?

Optimized Charging keeps your phone’s battery charging level at 80% for most of the night even if you keep the charger connected for the entire time.

Based on your usage patterns, OnePlus tries to predict the time you wake up. And just 100 minutes before you wake up, the Optimized Charging feature will resume charging and charges to 100%.

For example, if you wake up at 8 AM regularly, your OnePlus smartphone will take the hint and optimize charging accordingly. In this case, your phone will stay charged at 80% till 6:20 am. The remaining 20% charging will be done between 6:20 to 8 am.

How to enable Optimized Charging

Open the Settings app and go to Battery -> Optimized Charging and turn it on. Once enabled, the battery icon will change to indicate this.

Your phone will also show a notification to indicate that Optimized Charging is enabled. If you want to charge your phone immediately, tap on the “Continue Charging” button. This will disable it temporarily until you disconnect the charger.
