Elon Musk gloats after Meta resorted to announcing an Instagram and Facebook outage on X
  • Meta experienced significant outages that affected Instagram and Facebook on Tuesday.
  • Meta used rival platform X to announce the news.

Meta suffered a significant outage on Tuesday and resorted to using rival platform X to announce the news.

In his first post in a week, Meta spokesperson Andy Stone said: "We're aware people are having trouble accessing our services. We are working on this now.

With their own servers down, Meta had little choice but to take to Elon Musk's platform to get the word out — much to the billionaire's delight.

Musk quickly seized on the opportunity to mock the rival tech company in a series of posts.

"If you're reading this post, it's because our servers are working," Musk jibed. He then followed up the post with a meme about the outage.

The official business account for X also appeared to poke fun at Meta's woes in a separate post, joking: "We know why you're all here rn."

Facebook and Instagram suffered outages on Tuesday, with many users complaining they had issues logging in to their accounts.

A page run by Meta that keeps tabs on the status of the company's platforms and tools reported "major disruptions" to Facebook logins as of 10:17 a.m. ET.

A Meta spokesperson has since said the company has resolved the issue.

"Earlier today, a technical issue caused people to have difficulty accessing some of our services," Stone said, just over an hour after his initial post. "We resolved the issue as quickly as possible for everyone who was impacted, and we apologize for any inconvenience."

Representatives for Meta did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider, made outside normal working hours.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Musk have a tense relationship.

The relationship turned increasingly sour after Zuckerberg launched Meta's Threads last year as a direct competitor to X. The two rivals have been known to throw public jibes at each other and mock their competing platforms.
