Twitter, which has been plagued with the problem of fake accounts for some time now, has started cleaning up its platform. It Twitter has reportedly started removing inactive accounts in order to free up usernames of users that haven’t signed in their account recently.

As per a report from The Verge, Twitter has sent started sending emails to users of inactive accounts, warning them that their account will be removed and their username will be available to users who sign up on Twitter if they do not sign in to their Twitter accounts by December 11.

In a statement, Twitter has said that this is a part of its efforts to encourage people to actively log-in and use their Twitter account when they register an account. The company has also added that this is a part of its “Inactive accounts policy”.

“We have begun proactive outreach to many accounts who have not logged into Twitter in over six months to inform them that their accounts may be permanently removed due to prolonged inactivity,” said Twitter.

The social media giant said that Twitter has said that the account removal will take place over the course of several months starting from December 11 and not all at once. So , do not , so we do not expect thousands of accounts to be deleted immediately.

Twitter has also clarified that bot accounts will be safe, as long as they are active.
