Why only Google?

To search, to call, to entertain, and to communicate, we rely excessively on one service. Which one is that? Any guesses? Yes, you are right, Google. The technology founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin has become nerves of the world since its incorporation in 1998. The company has served us with other services like Google Docs, Google Slides, Google Sheets, Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Calendar for years. We are spoilt with choices.

When Google launched Gmail in 2004, many people traded their personal data for a service. Many got attracted to the feature of the spam filter and signed up. With all the data share, Google knows almost everything of the people who have used any of their services. But a dent came to their reputation when a piece of news was doing rounds, data leak by Google+. The company did not bother to inform the users about this, which led to severe repercussions, like quitting Google. But is it easy to do? Of course not.

Why is it challenging to quit Google?

Google instructs these days, not only your phone or laptop but also your home devices. Not just Google, you also have to quit Google Calendar, Gmail, Google Drive, etc. if you plan to end the dependency on this single most service. Besides, there is a bigger task of finding reliable alternatives to these services.

What are the other alternatives? Are they at par or better than Google?

DuckDuckGo, Kolab Now, Firefox, Apple Maps, Yahoo, and Bing are the alternatives to Google. However, for a person addicted to Google, switching to these options is not easy. It is found that these services are not as productive as Google. The email service, Kolab Now, does not run smoothly on the phone like Gmail. Searching something on DuckDuckGo is not as easy as on Google. Bing and Yahoo are a little better. But these, being search engines, do not have to fine-tune controls such as Any Time and All Results, unlike Google. Firefox is also of no use. It gets crashed when many tabs are open simultaneously. Also, Firefox zooms in and zooms out while working, which can annoy anyone. If you have an iPhone and you are not using Gboard, but the default Apple keyboard, all the best because it’s going to test your patience. Besides, Apple Maps do not give you detailed traffic data.

Should we rely on Google then?

With the information leak, it is difficult to say yes. But you can always avoid sharing all the information and opt for Google’s personal info and privacy manager. With this service, you can protect your personal information with the help of Privacy Checkup.

It is difficult for this generation to keep aside Google if we want to walk hand in hand towards progress. But displaying your private information is also not ideal. Then how do you think we can take charge of everything; Lets Google.
