​India's latest economic survey makes a case to use Aadhaar to create a master database for every citizen


The Indian Economic Survey 2018-19 has a whole chapter dedicated to how the Indian government is using the data of its citizens. It recommends that all the data that is currently spread out between different departments and private institutions should be linked back to the Aadhaar database at the centre.

Tracking users activities using the Aadhaar database has been a contentious issue in the country ever since the biometric identification system launched.

The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Scheme (MGNRES) has often been called into question for having too many leaks in the system and being victim of corruption. According to the Economic Survey 2018-19 highlights that technology has helped rectify the situation by using technology to make the systems processes more efficient — like the JAM trinity that includes Jan Dhan, Aadhaar and mobile payments.

The integration of National Electronic Fund Management System (NeFMS) has also helped filter any ‘ghost’ beneficiaries out of the system by keeping track of the workers who sign up and the ones that actually show up for work.

NASA successfully tested its launch abort system for the Artemis mission — the US space agency’s manned mission to the Moon. The system allows for astronauts to jump ship safely in case something goes wrong during the launch. The concept, in itself, isn’t new but the mission Orion capsule is a new piece of hardware.

NASA conducted the three minute test from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida using a Peacemaker missile acquired from the US Air Force.
