Tesla and Mercedes-Benz are in talks about a potential collaboration on an electric version of Mercedes-Benz's Sprinter van, Bloomberg reports.

"These talks are happening," Mercedes-Benz CEO Dieter Zetsche reportedly said on Wednesday.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said in November via Twitter that he would reach out to Mercedes-Benz to discuss the possibility of working together on an electric Sprinter.

"Maybe interesting to work with Daimler/Mercedes on an electric Sprinter. That's a great van. We will inquire," Musk said at the time.

Zetsche reportedly said on Wednesday that Musk's compliment about the Sprinter followed feedback from Tesla service employees who use the van.

Since Musk's tweet, Mercedes-Benz and Tesla automotive president Jerome Guillen have reportedly discussed the possibility of working on an electric Sprinter. Guillen previously worked for Daimler, Mercedes-Benz's parent company.

Tesla and Mercedes-Benz did not immediately respond to Business Insider's requests for comment.

Daimler sold a 4% stake in Tesla in 2014, a move Zetsche has said he does not regret.

Daimler will release an electric version of the Sprinter this year. Daimler has said the van will have a range of up to around 93 miles.
