The grey market is making a killing selling Apple's new iPhones at much lower prices in Mumbai and DelhiApple's latest iPhone 6s and 6s Plus phones are selling very fast through unauthorized channels in Delhi and Mumbai for the first time.

Even after the official launch of the iPhones in India, people have been buying them via unofficial route as they were offered cheaper prices.

The smartphones are also available on cheaper prices on eBay. On this platform, an imported iPhone 6s 16GB model was selling at Rs 53,153 while its official price is Rs 62,000. The iPhone 6s Plus 128GB model was available for Rs 80,180 on eBay compared with its official India price of Rs 92,000.

High official prices of the devices and softening rupee are the other reason why people are buying them through such channels.

The central government has increased the duty from this year on imported smartphones more than 10% to boost manufacturing of smartphones in the country under its 'Make in India' programme.

On the other hand, the weakening of rupee against dollar indicates that more units of the local currency are needed to pay for products sold by US companies.

In India, Apple sells its new smartphones at prices that are as much as Rs 14,000-16,000 higher than in markets such as the Hong Kong, and the Middle East.

The latest iPhones cost between Rs 62,000 and Rs 92,000 and are Rs 8,500-9,500 more than last year's launch prices.
