The Rams traded a treasure trove of draft picks for Jared Goff - and now he's their third-string quarterback

It's important not to put too much stock into NFL preseason, but at the moment, the Los Angeles Rams don't look like winners of the Jared Goff trade.

The Rams made a blockbuster trade prior to the draft to get the Titans' No. 1 overall pick. In doing so, they gave up a whopping six total picks, including their first- and third-round picks in 2017.

It was a heavy price to pay to move up to No. 1, where they, of course, decided to take Goff.

The early returns haven't been great. In a Week 4 preseason showing Thursday night, Goff went 6-16 for 67 yards, one touchdown, one interception, and one lost fumble.

Afterward, Rams coach Jeff Fisher not-so-subtly said Goff isn't even ready to be the Rams' backup - he'll likely be their third-stringer.

"I think it's going to take a little bit more time," Fisher said (via Rich Hammond of the Orange County Register). "That's not to say he can't be a two or start, but if we were starting right now, I'd probably have Sean [Mannion] as the two."

In translation: during Week 1 of the regular season, Goff will be behind Case Keenum and Mannion on the depth chart. Not a stellar beginning for a No. 1 pick. Over three preseason games, Goff finished with a 45% completion rate, 232 passing yards, two touchdowns, two interceptions, four sacks, and three fumbles with a 55.8 passer rating.

The Rams' poor play on the offensive line hasn't helped manners, but Goff learned quickly how difficult quarterbacking in the NFL is.

Though Fisher said Goff has made "significant progress" since the start of training camp, those numbers don't suggest he's close to being able to lead an offense in the regular season. It's much too early to judge Goff, but the Rams clearly traded up believing this year's draft class had a surefire quarterback who could lead them in a new city. Thus far, Goff hasn't been that.
