An Amtrak passenger train derailed in Missouri after hitting a dump truck. Passenger photos show train cars knocked off the tracks and flipped onto their side.

An Amtrak train traveling through Mendon, Missouri, derailed after hitting a dump truck at a crossing on Monday afternoon, the company confirmed to Insider.

Amtrak told Insider that it has received "early reports of injuries."

The train had around 243 passengers aboard and was traveling from Los Angeles to Chicago when it hit the truck at a public crossing at 1:42 p.m. local time.

Nearby residents said seven cars went off the tracks, FOX4KC reported.

Photos and videos shared on social media appeared to show multiple train cars flipped on their side as passengers climbed out.

In a Facebook live, an out of breath passenger sits on the side of a flipped over train car, "Looks like I'm going to be late to Chicago," he says.

Photos on Twitter from another passenger appear to show riders helping someone out of a train window while others stand on top of the flipped over train cars or off to the side.

Local law enforcement didn't immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
