  • Ford is selling a $200,000-$300,000 Bronco that's for off-roading only.
  • The Bronco DR is meant for desert racing competitions and hardcore off-roading.

Ford launched its most powerful Bronco SUV yet on Monday: the Bronco DR. But don't even think about driving it on the road.

The DR - short for Desert Racer - is intended for off-road use only, so you'll have to tow it to the desert before you can have any fun with it. Ford surely hopes you'll do so using an F-Series truck.

The regular Bronco SUV, relaunched this year after a decades-long hiatus, is already plenty capable off-road, sporting knobby tires, generous ground clearance, four-wheel-drive, and a host of rugged upgrades. The Bronco DR steps things up several notches and is meant for high-speed competition, Ford says.

"Bronco DR exists to give hardcore off-road enthusiasts a Built Wild, turnkey 4x4 to compete in desert racing events, including the unforgiving Baja 1000," Mark Rushbrook, Ford Performance Motorsports global director, said in a press release.

Ford based the DR on a regular Bronco four-door SUV, getting rid of everything that doesn't help you go fast over rough terrain. That means no air conditioning, no normal doors, no rear seats, and no windows. What the Bronco DR does get, however, is a 400-horsepower V8 and off-roading upgrades like a more flexible suspension and a full safety cage.

It also has a 65-gallon fuel tank and giant air intakes to cool the rear-mounted radiator. The entire body is made of fiberglass.

The first 50 Ford Bronco DR models will be available in late 2022 for a price in the mid-$200,000 range, Ford says. They'll be built by Multimatic, the same contractor that assembles Ford's supercar, the $500,000 GT. Ford plans to race a Bronco DR at the 2022 Baja 1000 race in Mexico.
