Technical Guruji, who just made it to the
Forbes India's 30 under 30 list.
Gaurav is one of the two YouTubers who have made it to the list – the other being comedian
Bhuvan Bam of BB Ki Vines. Let’s take a look at the man behind
Technical Guruji known for his famous tagline -
Toh chaliye shuru karte hain.
The boy from Hindi Medium
Gaurav Chaudhary attended Kendriya Vidyalaya, studied coding and enrolled himself into a Masters course in microelectronics in BITS Pilani. So far, you’re looking at a young engineering student from India who fits into the the most common stereotype.
After pursuing his Masters from BITS Pilani, he started working as a security engineer for the Dubai Police. Nothing out of the ordinary, not yet.
World’s largest Hindi tech YouTube channel
Though the idea of starting a YouTube channel was eating into him since 2012, he got around to starting
Technical Guruji only in 2015. But his first attempt was a breakthrough of sorts in the crowded tech YouTube market - as it was in Hindi.
For his first video, he collaborated with another YouTuber
Sharmaji Technical. And, it was an instant hit in a country which was willing to try new technologies as mobile data became cheaper and smartphones a norm.
Since then, Gaurav uploaded over 2,800 videos reviewing phones and other gadgets and has over 15 million subscribers. He has accumulated over 1.6 billion views so far, according to
Social Blade.
According to another
report, Technical Guruji is the world’s largest Hindi tech channel on YouTube. Within a few years, he turned into a millionaire, and also dishes out information on trending issues be it Coronavirus or the Tesla Cybertruck.
Gaurav’s success mantra - Reliance Jio
In an
interview, Gaurav credited Jio as one of the reasons for his success and says that the Indian YouTube scene has benefited greatly from it.
Jio offers cheap, fast 4G data and it is available pan-India. Combine this with the availability of 4G phones at affordable prices - resulting in youth that is captivated by technology -- providing him with his perfect target audience.
Catering to Bharat on YouTube
One of the reasons for Chaudhary’s massive subscriber and fan-base is his simplicity of thought along with Hindi and the unmissable boy-next-door appeal.
His catchphrases like
“Toh chaliye shuru karte hain”, “Namaskar doston” and more have made him an audience-favourite.
In addition to this, his videos are also easy to understand and don’t require extensive knowledge of the topic at hand. He posts one video on a daily basis with a summary of Indian smartphone industry news. He also organizes smartphone giveaways on a regular basis to keep his audience engaged.
Chaudhary however has his own share of controversies. After
educating his viewers about paid reviews, he was also on the receiving end from brands like Xiaomi. The company’s India managing director Manu Kumar Jain
questioned him if he can be unbiased after he went on-stage to launch a Samsung phone.
