She has replaced Ajay Tyagi, a 1984 batch IAS officer of Himachal Pradesh cadre, who was made Sebi chairman on March 1, 2017.

Madhabi Puri Buch is the first woman to helm the Indian stock market regulator and also the first person from the private sector to get into the SEBI board level.

In 2017, Buch was appointed as a new whole-time member of SEBI for a period of three years.

So far, members and chairman at SEBI were mainly appointed from the public sector, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Indian Administrative Services (IAS).

Buch has a management degree from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad and is a graduate in Mathematics from St. Stephen’s College, New Delhi.

She began her career with ICICI Bank and was with the ICICI Group for over 15 years. Later, she went on to become managing director (MD) and chief executive officer (CEO) at ICICI Securities from February 2009 to May 2011.

In 2011, she joined London-based private equity firm Greater Pacific Capital in Singapore.

Later in 2016, she served as consultant to the New Development Bank in Shanghai, China for a period of three years.
