India’s richest man cuts down on his generosity in 2023

Mukesh Ambani’s philanthropy

India’s richest man Mukesh Ambani is the third most generous billionaire in India as he donated ₹376 crore in 2023. But compared to last year, his donations went down by 8 percent. He is the only one in the Top 10 in the EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2023 whose philanthropic outgo went down.

Nadar’s most the generous

Shiv Nadar the founder of HCL Technologies is the most generous man in India who donated ₹2,042 crore in 2023. His donations also went up by 76 percent since last year, and they contribute towards arts, culture and heritage.

Premji’s zooming donations

Wipro’s Azim Premji is the second most generous man in India as he gave away ₹1,774 crore. His generosity swelled the most in the last one year — as it saw a massive 267 percent increase. That’s the highest rise amongst the top 10.

Kumar Mangalam Birla & family

The fourth most generous man is Kumar Mangalam Birla as he gave away ₹287 crore in 2023 — an increase of 18 percent since last year. Like Premji and Adani, he too donates for education.

Anil Agarwal & family

Vedanta’s Anil Agarwal & family too donated ₹241 crore and occupy No 7 on the list. Their donations went up by 46 percent in a year, and contribute towards healthcare.

Nandan Nilekani

The architect of Aadhar is eighth on the list, as he gave away ₹189 crore which grew 19 percent from last year. But what’s offbeat about his philanthropy is that it goes towards ecosystem building. But he’s not the only Nilekeni in the top 10 list.

Rohini Nilekani

The tenth most generous billionaire is Rohini Nilekani, is an author and also the wife of Nandan Nilekani. In 2023, she donated 170 crore towards ecosystem building. Her donations went up by 41 percent, marking her debut on the list.

Cyrus & Adar Poonawalla

The vaccine royalty also stepped up their donations which went up by 60 percent to 179 crore in 2023. As expected, the ninth most generous billionaires support healthcare.
