According to the United Nations, young people are almost three times more likely to be unemployed than adults and continuously exposed to lower quality of jobs, greater labour market inequalities, and longer and more insecure school-to-work transitions.

Skills and jobs for youth feature prominently in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and SDG target 4.4 calls for a substantial increase in the number of youth and adults who have relevant skills.

In a bid to address the issue, the Indian government came out with a National Skill Development Mission, under which it committed to establish skilling centres and agencies.

Many private companies joined the vision and opened skill development centres in India to provide training to the youth. One of the sectors where India employs maximum number of youth is automobile.

Maruti Suzuki said the passenger vehicle industry alone will create 1.25 lakh new jobs, for maintenance and repair, across automobile workshops in India.

The company aims to train 30,000 youth for workshop jobs in next five years and set up 15 new Automobile Skill Enhancement Centers (ASECs) across the country by end of August this year.
